Tyre industry lauds Customs for acting against smuggling

Tyre industry lauds Customs for acting against smuggling

KARACHI: The local tyre industry has lauded the efforts of Pakistan Customs for starting a campaign against smuggled trees and seizing of smuggled tyres worth over Rs541 million in Karachi.

Recently, Pakistan Customs’ Enforcement section seized a huge quantity of smuggled tyres in Karachi on the directives of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman and member customs operations.

GTR Tyre Chief Executive Officer Hussain Kuli Khan said this one seizure of smuggled tyres worth millions of rupees clearly shows how the menace of smuggling is damaging the national economy and local industry.

He added that 60 per cent of tyres with a total value of Rs300 billion, are being smuggled into Pakistan which is inflicting the loss of more than Rs50 billion to the national exchequer.

“The government should protect the local industry and national treasury from the damage caused by smuggling en-route mainly from Torkham and Chaman borders,” Khan said.

“Though the FBR has improved enforcement by taking strict measures at the customs level, still a lot more effort is required. Also, it is necessary to check the stock in the markets and take action against the sellers by confiscating the illegally imported tyres,” he added.

The GTR Tyre chef executive said that these concrete and positive steps will help in attracting new entrants to invest in the market and provide employment.

It has been reported that the smuggled tyres are supplied in the local markets after changing their specifications, serial numbers, sizes, and manufacturing dates through different embossing and alteration instruments.

Rupee gains for sixth consecutive session

Rupee

KARACHI: The Pakistani rupee extended gains against the dollar on Friday amid improved investors’ sentiments as Ishaq Dar took charge of the finance ministry, dealers said.

The exchange rate witnessed a gain of Rs1.18 to reach Rs228.45 against the dollar from the previous day’s closing of Rs229.63 at the interbank exchange market.

Analysts said the rupee rally against the dollar is driven by sentiment, while the exporters are selling dollars in the market over the likely increase in the value of the rupee in the near term.

The speculations regarding the local unit seem decreased following the finance minister’s announcement that no one would be allowed to manipulate the money market.

On the flip side, the current rally of the rupee is likely to be short-lived as the macroeconomics of the country are deteriorating where the foreign exchange reserves of the country witnessed a significant decline.

An expansion in the current account deficit is also likely on the back of the government’s import of essential items to meet local demand.

The foreign exchange reserves of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) fell $341 million, clocking in at an alarming level of $8 billion during the week ended September 23, compared with $8.34 billion on September 16.

The total liquid foreign exchange reserves held by the country stood at $13.76 billion. The net foreign reserves held by commercial banks amounted to $5.76 billion.

An ease in the current account deficit was witnessed during the current fiscal year. Pakistan’s current account deficit shrank 19 per cent during the first two months of the fiscal year 2023 due to a lower import bill and increase in exports.

Cumulatively, the country recorded a current account deficit amounting to $1.92 billion in the first two months of ongoing fiscal year, compared with $2.37 billion in the same period of last fiscal year, depicting a decline of $456 million, a report by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) showed.

The decline in the current account deficit is due to an 11 per cent surge in exports and around 2 per cent contraction in the import bill, the central bank said.

The local currency remained under pressure since the start of the current fiscal year. The rupee lost Rs23.6 or 11.52 per cent from Rs204.85 to dollar on June 30, 2022 to the current level of Rs228.45.

At the open market, the buying and selling of the dollar was recorded at Rs225 and Rs227.5 at 5:00pm PST.

Unisame seeks tax exemption for pharma sector

Unisame seeks tax exemption for pharma sector

KARACHI: The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (Unisame) has urged the government to exempt the pharmaceutical companies from taxes for a limited period of time, a statement said.

The Unisame President Zulfikar Thaver said the government should facilitate the pharmaceutical companies to cope up with the precarious situation. The pharmaceutical companies are compelled to increase their prices due to the high cost of production as imported raw materials have become very costly, he added.

The companies might stop manufacturing if the government does not allow them to increase their prices, which will create an adverse situation in the country, Thaver remarked.

The Unisame president advised that the government must give these companies tax exemption for a certain period of time to enable them cope up with the situation without increasing the prices.

Pakistani companies not using the brands and franchise of international companies may lower the potency of the drugs to survive without increasing the prices, which would badly affect the customers.

Thaver said the government may be requested to provide subsidies to the sector, but unfortunately the government lacks the resources and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has restricted the government from giving any subsidies, which further complicates the situation.

The Unisame council members showed concern over the disappearance of various medicines from the pharmacies, and that patients are perturbed and looking for alternatives and substitutes.

The members urged the government to take prompt measures and facilitate the pharmaceutical companies.

Imran’s rustled lies in fact a ‘conspiracy against nation’: PM

imran lies

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said the false narrative of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan declaring the incumbent government a ‘product of conspiracy’ had totally busted and urged the nation to distinguish between truth and fraud.

“Imran Niazi wasted five months of the nation by concocting lies and propaganda about his successor government, however, his own audio leaks exposed his fraudulence,” he said in his address at the foundation-stone laying ceremony of the Bhara Kahu Bypass project.

The prime minister said Imran Khan blamed the politicians as traitors, however in reality, it was he who betrayed the nation.

“Imran’s lies about an ‘imported government’ are in fact a conspiracy against the entire nation,” he said, stressing the need for people to understand the reality of a liar.

PM Sharif, who recently represented the country at the forums of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the United Nations General Assembly, said the leaders of some friendly countries during the sideline meetings conveyed to him their annoyance over the irresponsible foreign policy of Imran Khan.

The prime minister said his government was steadfast in dealing with the immense challenges after the previous government pushed the country to the brink of economic collapse.

He expressed his commitment to rebuilding and developing the country that was bearing the brunt of Imran Khan’s tenure in the government.

The prime minister was given a briefing on the occasion regarding the modalities and execution of the project. It was highlighted that the Rs 6 billion projects of 5.4 kilometers had been finalized after a transparent bidding process.

The prime minister directed to ensure completion of the Bhara Kahu Bypass within four months and also emphasized further reducing the project cost.
