LONDON: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Ishaq Dar reached Islamabad on Monday, BOL News reported.

On the advice of Nawaz Sharif, Dar chose to go with the premiere of Pakistan along with his son Ali Dar. Ishaq Dar will take an oath of the posts of Senate and Finance Minister after reaching Pakistan on Tuesday. Ishaq Dar was living in self-imposed exile in London for five years.
Miftah Ismail submitted his resignation during the PML-N leadership meeting in London yesterday.

Ishaq Dar, known as the economic wizard, has been given the task of reducing inflation in Pakistan, controlling the dollar, and developing the economy.

According to the details, Ishaq Dar left Luton Airport along with the staff and vehicles of the Pakistan High Commission.

“We are starting our journey from where we stopped it, ” Ishaq Dar.

As decided, Ishaq Dar will assume charge as the finance minister on Tuesday, September 27 while incumbent Finance Minister Miftah Ismail will remain part of the government.

Nawaz Sharif has expressed his immense displeasure over the economic policies of Miftah Ismail. He also raised concern over the rise in prices of commodities which has directly affected ordinary people and dented the party’s support base.

Apple iPhone 14 prices in Pakistan; Import vs Local buy

At the moment, import tariffs in Pakistan are exorbitantly expensive, whether it be for automobiles, laptops, GPUs, or other goods.

This is the primary cause of Pakistan’s worsening smartphone price trends over time.

This month, Apple’s new iPhones arrived in Pakistan, and the local prices are as outrageous as you might anticipate.

The current exchange rate for a basic iPhone 14 is $799, which is equal to Rs. 192,343. On Telemart and other online shops, a 128 GB iPhone 14 can be purchased for about Rs. 381,999 in Pakistan.

But what would it cost for you to import an iPhone? Is it cheaper than purchasing a phone locally? Now that we have verified import tax data from FBR, we can finally respond to these queries.

These mobile phone import taxes were taken directly from an FBR document that was leaked.

Note: Mobile Levy = ML, Withholding Tax = WHT, Sales Tax = ST, and Regulatory Duty = RD.

  • Up to $30: RD (Rs. 300), ST (Rs. 200), WHT (Rs. 100) ML (Rs. 100)

  • $500 to $700: RD (Rs. 22,000), ST (17% of base USD value), WHT (Rs. 11,500), ML (Rs. 8,000)
  • Above $700: RD (Rs. 22,000), ST (17% of base USD value), WHT (Rs. 11,500), ML (Rs. 16,000)

These calculations suggest that the cost of importing a 128 GB iPhone 14 will be around Rs. 274,541. Following is a breakdown:

(RD) Rs. 22,000 + ST (17% of 192,343 = Rs. 32,698) + WHT (Rs. 11,500) + ML (Rs. 16,000) + phone value ($799 = Rs. 192,343). All of this adds up to Rs. 274,541, which is more than Rs. 100,000 lower than the local price.

It is also important to note that by paying these taxes, you will automatically receive PTA’s approval and won’t have to pay an additional cost.

The handsets’ final pricing are the import prices previously specified. Depending on the vendor, you might have to pay for shipping, but you can also arrange for someone to send it to you from abroad.

Please take note that you will not be required to pay withholding taxes on a phone that is transported as personal luggage.

KARACHI: Gold declined Rs6,800 to reach 143,300/tola on Monday as the dollar strengthened in the international market following a hike in the interest rate by the US Federal Reserve besides an increase in the value of the rupee.

Gold 24kt declined by Rs6,800/tola and Rs5,829/10 grammes to hit Rs143,300/tola and Rs122,857/10 grammes, respectively.

The yellow metal witnessed a drop of Rs3,750/tola on Saturday, September 24, 2022. Gold has weakened by Rs10,550/tola in the past two consecutive sessions.

On a global stage, the gold prices were recorded at $1,640/ounce on Monday, pulled down by a firmer dollar and as major central banks adopted an aggressive stance on interest rates.

The prices of the yellow metal recorded a decline of $2/ounce in the international market as it dropped to reach $1,640/ounce.

The price of silver remained unchanged at Rs1,570/tola and Rs1,346/10 grammes. The international silver prices were recorded at $18.70/ounce on Monday.

Gold prices have fallen more than $400, or over 20 per cent, since scaling above the key $2,000/ounce level in March as major central banks raised interest rates sharply to tame soaring inflation.

The US central bank and a number of other major central banks raised interest rates last week, triggering concerns over its impact on growth.

Last week, the US central bank hiked the interest rates by 75 basis points and signalled more increases are to come.

On the local front, the rupee has recovered against the dollar at the interbank foreign exchange market, following the news of Ishaq Dar becoming the new finance minister of Pakistan.

The local unit gained Rs2.63 against the dollar to reach Rs237.02 from Friday’s closing of Rs239.65/dollar.

The market sentiments got a boost as Dar, known for keeping the rupee overvalued against the dollar, will likely take charge of the finance ministry after Miftah Ismail officially tenders his resignation.

KARACHI: The Pakistan stock market closed higher after witnessing a bullish session throughout the day on Monday, as the global commodities prices witnessed a significant decline, besides a recovery in the value of the rupee.

An analyst at Topline Securities said the Pakistan equities closed in the green zone, where the benchmark KSE-100 Index settled at 41,151 level.

“The trading session kicked off on a positive note over declining international commodities prices and strengthening rupee against the dollar which led the market to remain in a positive zone,” he added.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange KSE-100 shares Index gained 531.33 points, or 1.31 per cent to close at 41,151.54 points. The KSE-30 shares Index gained 206.94 points, or 1.36 per cent, to close at 15,419.88 points.

An analyst at Arif Habib Limited said the bulls dominated the market throughout the day.

The market opened in a positive zone as the rupee made a sharp recovery against the dollar in the interbank foreign exchange market, he added.

“The investors gained confidence over the clarity on the political ground as the volumes climbed significantly in the main board, while hefty volumes were witnessed in the third tier stocks,” he remarked.

As many as 326 scrips were active of which 224 advanced, 79 declined and 23 remained unchanged.

The ready market volumes stood at 213.02 million shares, compared with the turnover of 165.29 million shares in the last trading session.

The companies which reflected the highest gains included Premium Textile up Rs55.89 to close at Rs854.89/share, and Pak Tobacco up Rs55 to close at Rs845/share.

The companies which reflected the most losses included Nestle Pakistan down Rs105 to close at Rs5,600/share, and Sapphire Textile down Rs69.26 to close at Rs1,104.74/share.

The highest volumes were witnessed in TRG Pakistan with a turnover of 27.47 million shares. The scrip gained R8.60 to close at Rs126.65/share, followed by Cnergyico PK with a turnover of 17.36 million shares. It gained 15 paisas to close at Rs4.93/share.

Unity Foods remained the third with a turnover of 15.40 million shares. It gained Rs1.26 to finish at Rs23.06/share.
