Qatar announces new solar mega-projects

Qatar announces new solar mega-projects

Gas-rich Qatar on Tuesday announced two major solar projects that will more than double its energy output from the renewable source within two years.

Energy Minister Saad Sherida al-Kaabi hailed the new development as a major step in efforts to “increase the reliance on high-efficiency renewal energy” in the Gulf state, which is one of the world’s biggest liquefied natural gas producers.

The new plants at Mesaieed and Ras Laffan will take Qatar’s solar output to 1.67 gigawatts by the end of 2024, Qatar Energy said in a statement.

Mesaieed and Ras Laffan are key bases for Qatar’s natural gas production, which is also undergoing major expansion.

South Korean conglomerate Samsung will lead construction of the new solar plants, with an initial investment of more than $600 million, the statement said.

While lagging behind other Gulf states in the solar race, Qatar has announced a target of five gigawatts of solar energy capacity by 2035.

Last month it plugged the 800 megawatt Al-Kharsaah solar farm into its national energy grid, according to industry sources.

Al-Kharsaah is expected to be fully operational before the start of the World Cup football tournament on November 20.

Organisers have used the huge solar plant west of Doha to back claims that Qatar will host the first “net zero” World Cup — where greenhouse gas emissions are compensated by renewable energy sources.

Desert sand and dust on the two million photo voltaic cells at Al-Kharsaah are cleaned each day by robots, and Qatar Energy said the same system would be used at the two new farms.

Trump social media platform faces money woes, modest following

Trump social media platform

Signs are growing that Donald Trump’s social media platform Truth Social is in financial trouble, with just a modest following six months after launching.

Fox Business Network reported Thursday that the platform has halted payments to the company that hosts it, RightForge, and owes $1.6 million.

The platform’s parent company, Trump Media and Technology Group, did not respond to a request for comment.

A RightForge spokesman would not comment on the reports that Trump Social is not paying its bills.

“RightForge was on the ground floor of building Truth Social and will continue to support President Trump in his endeavors,” the company said.

Meanwhile the parent company’s merger with Digital World Acquisition Corp — a blank check company formed specifically to carry out a merger — has yet to take place, 10 months after the announcement that it would happen. This fusion is supposed to bring in fresh funding for the Trump platform.

DWAC published Thursday a call for a special shareholders meeting September 6 at which investors will be asked to approve a one-year delay for carrying out the merger, until Sept 8 of 2023.

Without a favorable vote for an extension the blank check company said it will be forced to dissolve.

Financial data published Thursday said that as of late June, DWAC had only $3,000 in cash on hand.

Truth Social bills itself as Trump’s answer to platforms like Twitter, which the former president used as a loud political bullhorn until he was ejected from it after a mob he had egged on assaulted the US Capitol in January 2021.

But six months later it is in 30th place in an Apple ranking of social media apps downloaded onto iPhones.

The Statista data base says Truth Social is downloaded only around 50,000 times per week.

Trump’s account on Truth Social has 3.91 million followers; on Twitter he had 79.5 million when he was booted.

Shares in DWAC have fallen 71 percent since hitting their peak in early March.

Elon Musk’s Twitter war escalates

Elon Musk's Twitter war
  • A US judge ordered Twitter to hand over more information to Elon Musk on bogus accounts.
  • The judge reprimanded Musk’s team for making “absurdly broad” requests for data.
  • The lawyers for Twitter had voiced fear that Musk would abuse the private information given to him.

A US judge ordered Twitter to hand over more information to Elon Musk on bogus accounts on Thursday, a crucial matter the billionaire is relying on to attempt and get his takeover offer revoked.

While giving the Tesla CEO’s team a chance to support its claim that Musk was deceived, Judge Kathaleen McCormick reprimanded them for making “absurdly broad” requests for “trillions upon trillions of data points.”

The judge ordered Twitter to turn over data on 9,000 accounts that the company audited by the end of 2021, which makes it possible for Musk to utilize the data in his attempt to renegotiate the $44 billion transaction.

Without going into further detail, McCormick stated in her four-page decision that “some additional data from the plaintiff (Twitter) is required.”

Musk claimed that Twitter was lying about the amount of fictitious or spam accounts, which prompted vehement denials and a lawsuit from the social media company that resulted in a trial that has been scheduled for mid-October.

In a hearing on Wednesday, Musk’s attorneys fought hard to get the company to release a ton of documents while capitalizing on a recently exposed Twitter whistleblower’s allegations of major problems at the company.

Bradley Wilson, a lawyer representing Twitter, argued in response that the firm had not misled anyone and that Musk wanted a second chance to ask the questions he should have before making his unsolicited acquisition approach earlier this year.

The firm objected to sharing several data types because it would breach users’ legal rights to privacy, according to its counsel Wilson.

Twitter’s lawyers contend that even if Musk’s experts reach a different conclusion on the volume of spam accounts at the company, that would not constitute a material breach that would allow him to violate the buyout agreement.

In his complaint to US authorities, whistleblower Peiter Zatko claims that Twitter has misrepresented account numbers because “exact measurements would undermine the company’s valuation if they ever became public.”

It wasn’t immediately obvious whether the lawsuit and Musk’s lawyers’ use of it will materially change how the matter is handled.

The lawyers for Twitter had voiced fear that Musk would abuse the private information they gave him.

The billionaire’s staff “have agreed to treat this data as highly confidential,” the court stated.

Scientists detect ocean in nearby exoplanet

Scientists detect ocean in nearby exoplanet
  • The planet, called TOI-1452 b, is entirely formed of water and may be home to life.
  • This is not the first time that researchers have discovered a water-rich planet.
  • Expert research indicates that the exoplanet may also be rocky like Earth.

Recently, scientists found a stunning ocean, but it is not on our planet. Only 100 light-years separate our world from the exoplanet TOI-1452 b, which is entirely formed of water and maybe home to life.

This week, astronomers from the Université de Montréal made their discovery.

The planet has a similar appearance to Earth but is significantly larger and more massive. It is situated at the ideal distance from its star, just like Earth is.

As a result, the planet is just right—not too hot, nor too cold.

Scientists think life can exist in the ocean, but they’re not sure what kind of life can endure there. But this is not the first time that researchers have discovered a water-rich planet.

Scientists have long been fascinated by the water bodies on some of Jupiter’s moons. It is also not apparent if these are true deep oceans or just a series of thick water layers that will soon reach the rock.

The planet may be one of the rocks that scientists eventually hope to colonize because it is so close to us and is coated in water.

Expert research indicates that the exoplanet may also be rocky like Earth.
