‘India’s Warren Buffett’ set for take-off with new airline

India's Warren Buffett

The world is gripped by recession fears, jet fuel prices are sky-high, and aviation is a notoriously fickle industry. But the billionaire dubbed “India’s Warren Buffett” is launching an airline on Sunday.

Co-founding Akasa Air was a rare departure into entrepreneurship for Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, who made his fortune on the stock exchange as a value share investor and is often compared to the Berkshire Hathaway chairman and CEO.

The 62-year-old’s entry into the capital-intensive sector has raised eyebrows, with many pointing to the chequered history of billionaire-backed airlines in India as well as the daunting global economic outlook.

“A lot of people question why I’ve started an airline. Rather than answer them, I say I’m prepared for failure,” the billionaire said at an industry event in February.

“It’s better to have tried and failed than not tried at all.”

Several such ventures have failed in recent years.

Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya is fighting extradition from Britain on charges of financial fraud after his pet project Kingfisher Airlines went bankrupt in 2012, losing Indian banks more than $1 billion.

Disgraced entrepreneur Subrata Roy counted Air Sahara as a part of his empire for more than a decade, until consecutive losses forced a sale to fellow self-made billionaire Naresh Goyal’s Jet Airways in 2007.

Jet collapsed in 2019, with many blaming the Air Sahara deal for its downfall.

“People say that in order to become a millionaire, you first become a billionaire and start an aviation company,” quips Anas Rahman Junaid, founder and managing director of rich list Hurun India.

But as one of the world’s fastest-growing air travel markets, the country of 1.4 billion people has also proved a wealth creator for some airline entrepreneurs.

“The richest aviation billionaires in the world are from India: the founders of IndiGo,” Junaid says, referring to Rakesh Gangwal and Rahul Bhatia — whose 2006-launched airline is India’s top domestic carrier.

Barring British entrepreneur Richard Branson, whose $6 billion net worth is derived from diversified Virgin Group companies, Junaid says Gangwal and Bhatia — each worth over $4 billion — have created the most wealth from a “pureplay aviation business”.

And for Jhunjhunwala the challenge is personal: “I hope to prove people wrong,” he said. “Now it’s become a matter of ego.”

Bullish on aviation

Nicknamed the “Oracle of Dalal Street” — a play on Buffett’s moniker and the location of the Bombay Stock Exchange — Jhunjhunwala has invested $35 million for an estimated 40 percent stake in the new airline.

He is India’s 52nd richest person, with a net worth of $3.5 billion and significant holdings in more than 30 Indian stocks, but rarely starts his own companies.

“He’s a street-smart investor and a very savvy trader,” market analyst Arun Kejriwal told AFP.

“But running an airline is not the same as stock trading.”

Analysts expect Jhunjhunwala will leave day-to-day operations to a management team of industry veterans, who are modelling Akasa on the likes of Ryanair and Southwest Airlines.

But sharp rises in jet fuel prices and a weakening Indian rupee cloud the outlook for an industry still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic.

“India does not produce even a nut or even a screw in India. Everything has to be imported from the US or Europe,” said aviation analyst Mark Martin.

The pandemic saw India’s air travel industry lose an estimated $8 billion over two years, according to research by aviation market research firm CAPA. Government estimates peg losses at $2.5 billion.

Nonetheless, several airlines are vying to serve a growing middle class, and Narendra Modi’s government has pledged to build 80 airports by 2025, making it a key market for manufacturers Boeing and Airbus.

‘World’s greenest airline’

Akasa — sky in Sanskrit — is pitching itself as an ultra-low-cost carrier with tickets 10 percent cheaper than competitors.

It will operate two single-aisle Boeing 737 MAX aircraft between four Indian cities starting Sunday, and hopes to have a fleet of 18 by the end of next year.

It also claims to be the world’s “greenest” airline, with staff uniforms including sneakers with recycled rubber soles and fabric made of marine waste.

But analysts point out the Boeing 737 MAX remains restricted in some countries after two crashes that killed 346 people in total.

“An airline business can make you a tremendous amount of money,” said Martin.

“But it also can make you extremely open and susceptible to risk.”

Prince Andrew faces financial criticism over Sarah Ferguson debt

Prince Andrew
  • Duke and Duchess of York compete to sell their £17 million Swiss chalet.
  • However, they have been served with a “freezing order” due to a massive unpaid bill.
  • Ex-wife Sarah Ferguson recently purchased a new £ 5 million London home.

Prince Andrew debt dispute with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson continues, despite her recent purchase of a new £ 5 million London home.

The ex-couple is competing to sell their £17 million Swiss chalet in order to cover Duke’s mounting debts.

However, they have been served with a “freezing order” due to a massive unpaid bill owed to another Swiss couple.

Ferguson has stated that she is “constantly on the verge of financial bankruptcy,” but she has recently purchased a luxurious new home.

The Duke of Westminster, one of the country’s wealthiest men, previously owned the luxurious home.

According to The Mirror, a royal source stated, “The Duke and Duchess’s finances appear to be incredibly complex.”

“The sensible thing to do would be to repair any debts and to do away with any further controversy at all.”

In the meantime, another royal source stated, “The sums, although disputed, are clearly very, very large indeed.”

“It is not known who knew about this but the fact it has been made public is causing even more concern.”

“What is left to come out of the woodwork? It’s simply staggering.”

Ending subsidies, increased taxes saved country from default: minister

subsidies

KARACHI: The government’s immediate steps of ending fuel subsidies and increasing direct taxes are bearing fruits as it saved the country from default, Finance Minister Mifah Ismail said on Friday.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) held a gong ceremony to welcome Finance Minister Miftah Ismail who struck the gong to open the trading day.

The finance minister expressed joy on visiting the exchange. “I fully understand the importance of capital markets and the critical role they play in the development of a modern economy. We are committed to addressing all issues that have held back the capital markets in Pakistan and look forward to our discussion on the capital markets and the economy,” he said.

“As an economist, I look at the fundamentals. From a macroeconomic perspective, we have to keep our economy solvent and protect it from default. A few days back, the rupee started appreciating against the dollar. This occurred because we reduced imports, thereby decreasing our foreign exchange outflow,” Ismail added.

Even though this is not the best case scenario in terms of growth, it is far superior to the boom and bust cycles of the past, he said, adding that he personally does not believe in the import substitution model and is in favour of export expansion. “This is where we plan to focus our efforts and we will take this forward for sustained economic growth.”

“Our tax to GDP percentage is very low at 9.2 per cent. We have to do better in order to achieve economic stability but we will undertake reforms in a gradual and orderly fashion in this regard.”

PSX Chairperson Dr Shamshad Akhtar, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) Chairman Aamir Khan, PSX Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Farrukh H Khan, PSX board members, key stakeholders and distinguished guests were also present at the occasion.

PSX Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Farrukh H Khan said that it is imperative for the growth of Pakistan’s economy to create a conducive environment which will help to attract more companies and investors to the capital markets.

“A broad based capital market helps to achieve important economic and social objectives, including improved savings and investment rates, documentation of the economy, increasing the number of taxpayers and reducing wealth inequality. Hence, developing the capital markets is fully aligned with the government’s stated objectives,” he added.

The capital markets do not ask for any concessions or subsidies, he said. “We only want a level playing field compared to other asset classes and the large informal sector. Please give that to us, along with consistent tax and economic policies.”

PSX Chairperson Dr Shamshad Akhtar informed the finance minister of some of the concerns of the PSX for the betterment of the capital markets and the economy.

“The PSX has formulated a new strategy which will be launched this year. Some key actions will be taken that will pave the way to augment both the supply side through mobilising equity and debt listings and issuances as well as the supply side by increasing outreach to investors,” she said.

A significant aspect is strengthening the governance of not only the exchange itself but also that of the listed companies,” Dr Shamshad added.

“The PSX is a mature exchange and it has offered unbeatable returns. The PSX is not only transforming but also has a good governance structure along with a robust regulatory framework. The most recent accomplishment is the Onsite Joint Inspection that has been put in place which will ease the burden on the brokerage community,” she added.

SECP Chairman Aamir Khan expressed that well-functioning capital markets can immensely contribute to the wellness of the overall economy, corporate sector and investors and for improving savings and investment rates.

The event concluded with a closed door meeting which included the finance minister along with the top management of PSX, SECP, and key stakeholders. In the meeting, matters impacting the capital markets, business, the current economic scenario and challenges thereof were discussed.

Meghan Markle is pressing Prince Harry for ‘difficult’ answers

Meghan Markle
  • Meghan Markle reportedly has no qualms about ‘increasing’ the pressure on Prince Harry to reveal the truth.
  • The truth in question is the low turnout for Prince Harry’s UN speech in New York City.
  • According to the UN, it wasn’t really that well publicised.

Meghan Markle reportedly has no qualms about ‘increasing’ the pressure on Prince Harry to reveal the truth.

The truth in question is the low turnout for Prince Harry’s UN speech in New York City.

Neil Sean, a royal expert, provided insight into the marital squabble and explained how it occurred as “not a good look”, for either of their brands.

The commentator explained on his YouTube channel, “It must have been very difficult for Harry. It kind of looked like a British pantomine that hadn’t sold out.”

“All those empty seats is never a good look. According to the UN it wasn’t really that well publicised. Rubbish. This was put into the world’s media.”

“Everybody would have known about it so what was the particular problem?” He even mentioned.

“Meghan wants answers, naturally because they made that big effort to come all the way from California to spend time in New York and when they arrived, there wasn’t the welcome they both anticipated. You can understand they schlepped all those miles to do that.”

Previously, a Body language expert says Meghan Markle uses her smile to talk to and reassure people around her.

In an interview with a media source, Judi James talked about how Meghan Markle’s smile is like that of her sister-in-law Kate Middleton’s.

“With Meghan and Kate we have two of the most beautiful smiles on the planet.”

Prince William
  • Grant Harrold, the Duke of Cambridge’s former butler, says William has inherited his mother’s ability to be a “people person”.
  • Prince William and the other younger royals have realised that they can’t get away with being aloof, he said.
  • According to sources close to William, he seems like he will be a King of the people.

Prince William will rule over people’s hearts as a result of her late mother, Princess Diana.

According to Grant Harrold, the Duke of Cambridge’s former butler, Diana’s legacy brings William’s future status as monarch closer to people’s hearts.

“I really think William is a people’s person,” he stated. “The Queen is as well but he’s a real people’s person as you can see through his interactions, hugs and even how he’s spoken out about caring for people’s mental health and homelessness.”

according to the sources William inherited his mother’s ability to be a “people person.”

“He seems like he will be a King of the people,” he said.

“I think William and the other younger royals have realised that they can’t get away with being aloof,” he added.

“The Queen can get away with it because she’s the Queen and she’s from a different era, but the younger royals have been brought up very differently,” he said of William’s appearance at the Euro final.
