PIA plane impounded in Malaysia: Airline pays $7 million to jet company

Pakistan Extends COVID Standard Operating Procedures For Inbound Flights

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on Friday informed the London High Court that it has paid around $7 million to Peregrine Aviation Charlie Ltd in the case pertaining to two jets leased to it by the Dublin-based AerCap.

The development came after the Malaysian authorities seized a PIA Boeing-777 at the Kuala Lumpur airport last Friday, on the orders of a local Malaysian court, over the non-payment of aircraft lease dues owed to the Dublin-based AerCap.

Lawyers for both the PIA and the airliner sought an adjournment as they hoped that the full amount would be paid through an agreement without the court issuing an order against PIA.

Appearing online, the airline’s lawyer Erin Hitchens requested the judge to adjourn the hearing as the parties settle issues of the lease, rent, interest, lease, and the allocation of payment.

The Dublin-based AerCap’s lawyer told the court: “The claimant’s position is that the sums were paid today by the defendant (PIA).”

The court was told that PIA didn’t make payments since it asked for the amendment of its claim in July and that it owed $580,000 per month to the airliner, but it didn’t pay and litigation was initiated.

The leasing company had filed a case against PIA in London High Court in October 2020 over its failure to pay the leasing fee — worth about $14 million — which had been pending for six months.

In response, PIA had maintained that since the COVID-19 pandemic had seriously affected the aviation industry, there should be a reduction in the overhead charges.

NAB should end for the betterment of Pakistan, says Shahid Khaqan

Shahid Khaqan

Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has on Friday said that Pakistan should abolish the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for the betterment of Pakistan.

Addressing a press conference alongside PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal, Shahid Khaqan said,”Many other people are going to be exposed in the Broadsheet scandal,” adding that at present, Pakistan has the “most corrupt government in power”.

“Those appointed to track down corruption turned out to be the most corrupt in the country themselves,” he said. “Every job is being sold in the Punjab government today. How will corrupt people stop corruption?”

Speaking about the former Supreme Court judge Azmat Saeed who has been appointed to head the Broadsheet Inquiry, Abbasi said that he “requests Azmat Saeed not to head the inquiry because he himself was part of NAB.”

“Don’t be a part of the deal which puts the country’s honour at stake,” he said.

Justice (R) Azmat Saeed was employed as the deputy prosecutor general of NAB in the year 2000 for a period of one year. He was appointed special prosecutor of NAB in 2001 to pursue cases before the accountability courts at Attock Fort and Rawalpindi.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi further said that the Broadsheet scandal is not about probing corruption worth a few million rupees but it is the “story of destroying politics in the country.”

Khawaja Asif sent to jail on 14-day judicial remand in assets case

Khawaja Asif judicial remand

An accountability court in Lahore rejected National Accountability Bureau (NAB) request seeking a 15-day extension in the physical remand of PML-N leader Khawaja Asif and sent him on a 14-day judicial remand instead.

The PML-N leader was arrested late December last year from outside the residence of Ahsan Iqbal where he had come to attend a party meeting. NAB said Khawaja Asif has been arrested in  a case pertaining to accumulating assets beyond known sources of income.

During the hearing, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor sought physical remand of Khawaja Asif. He said that millions of rupees had been deposited in different bank accounts of the accused, whereas, Rana Abdul Waheed had deposited Rs30 million.

When the persons got interrogated, they said that Asif had given the cash to deposit it to the accounts, he added.

Khawaja Asif had not disclosed the sources of income to get Rs280 million in his accounts, whereas, he also failed to provide satisfactory answers for making Rs60 million investments in different companies.

In 2009, Rs100 million had been deposited to his account from a foreign country, the prosecutor said.

The judge remarked that NAB is responsible for holding investigation and it should tell the court about the information it collected from a foreign company.

To this, NAB prosecutor said that the company’s owner is Asif’s friend and he is summoned on January 28.

The defence lawyer argued that the investigators want Asif to carry out his own investigation.

However, the court ordered the authorities to produce Khawaja Asif on February 7 again. Later, the jail officials left the accountability court along with the PML-N leader.

Canada ramps up deportations of thousands despite pandemic fear

Canada deportations

Despite the increasing fear due to Coronavirus outbreak across the globe, Canada deported thousands of people even as COVID-19 raged last year and lawyers say deportations are ramping up, putting people needlessly at risk.

Canada is struggling to stop a second wave from spiraling out of control, and its political leaders are begging residents to stay home to prevent the spread.

Lawyers and human rights advocates are decrying Canada’s November decision to resume deportations. Until now, the extent of the country’s pandemic deportations was not known.

Canada counted 12,122 people as removed in 2020 – 875 more than the previous year and the highest number since at least 2015. The government says this was necessary and done safely.

In 2019 there were 1,657 administrative removals, compared with 8,215 last year.

Even subtracting those numbers, that leaves thousands of people deported as the governments cautioned against travel of any kind for safety reasons.

Even as Canada continues to deport non-citizens during a health crisis, US President Joe Biden paused deportations for 100 days within hours of being sworn in on Wednesday.

Canada officially imposed a moratorium on deportations in March that it lifted at the end of November.

Broadsheet probe will put Opposition in a “tough spot”, predicts Sheikh Rasheed

Sheikh Rasheed Broadsheet scandal

Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed has on Friday said that the Broadsheet LLC scandal and the government’s probe over the latest revelations in the case will put the Opposition in a “tough spot”, as he dismissed their objections to the government’s choice of committee head.

Sheikh Rasheed, while chairing a press conference in Karachi asked the Opposition that if they are against the appointment of Saeed, then would they rather have Malik Qayyum in his place.

It should be noted that PML-N “rejected” a probe panel established by the government, which is to be headed by former Supreme Court Justice Azmat Saeed.

The interior minister asked the Opposition that if they are against the appointment of Saeed, then would they rather have Malik Qayyum in his place.

Qayyum was appointed as a Lahore High Court judge on Oct 24, 1988, but resigned after the Supreme Court in April 2001 described his conduct as “biased” while deciding an appeal of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto against her conviction in a corruption case.

According to reports, the PPP had “released the transcript of a phone conversation indicating (Saeed’s) collusion with the incumbent government” (PML-N) regarding a judgment in a case against Benazir.

Who apologizes first, Kareena Kapoor or Saif Ali Khan?

Saif Kareena

Whenever one sees the power couple of Bollywood, Saif Ali Khan, and Kareena Kapoor Khan, they look the most royal, sophisticated, romantic, and everything good. But when it comes to arguing, they are the same as other couples in the world.

The Asoka actress recently revealed that her husband is the first one to apologize every time they get into any fight.

During her own chat show, Bebo asked Kunal Kemmu who apologizes first, him or her sister-in-law Soha Ali Khan? To which Gol Maal 2 actor replied that the word “sorry” does not exist in Soha’s dictionary.

Woh milta hi nahi hai, kabhi mil gaya toh aisa lagta hai ki mindblowing cheez ho gayi (It is hard to find that word in her dictionary; if she ever apologizes, I feel like some mind-blowing thing has happened),” he joked.

Responding to that, the Tashan actress revealed that in her marriage, Saif is the one to step first to apologize,

“I feel even Saif says sorry. He is the one who always says sorry also. I think men generally… probably, it is them doing the mistakes.”

“So it’s better to say sorry and end it and make peace. Otherwise, you can’t sleep,” she added.

Recently, policemen were spotted outside Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s home on Sunday in Mumbai.
