New Zimbabwe coach Houghton confident of reaching T20 World Cup

Zimbabwe coach Houghton confident
  • Zimbabwe are hosting an eight-team tournament to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
  • Dave Houghton replaced Indian Lalchand Rajput as Zimbabwe coach last month.
  • The Netherlands are the highest-ranked Group B contender with Papua New Guinea in contention.

Dave Houghton believes he will get his second stint as Zimbabwe coach off to a perfect start by qualifying for the 2022 Twenty20 World Cup in Australia.

Zimbabwe are hosting from Monday to Sunday in southern city Bulawayo an eight-team tournament, with the finalists securing the final two World Cup places.

Qualifying begins with Zimbabwe playing Singapore and Jersey facing the United States in Group A at the Queens Sports Club.

Later on Monday, the Netherlands meet Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong takes on Uganda in Group B at the Bulawayo Athletic Club.

Group winners and runners-up progress to the semi-finals, and the penultimate-stage winners join 14 other qualifiers in Australia during October.

Former star Zimbabwe batsman Houghton replaced Indian Lalchand Rajput last month after a disastrous white-ball series against Afghanistan in Harare.

Zimbabwe suffered 3-0 losses in both one-day international and T20 series, triggering an immediate change of coaches with Rajput becoming a technical director.

Among those who will assist Houghton is South African Lance Klusener, the former Afghanistan coach.

“We are a full-blown Test nation and should beat our group opponents,” said Houghton, who has fond memories of Bulawayo having scored a Zimbabwe Test record 266 against Sri Lanka there 28 years ago.

“My expectation, and that of the team, is to win this tournament and return to the World Cup after a six-year absence.

“Zimbabwe have struggled lately and the problem has been largely mental. Some players have underperformed because they feared making mistakes.

“Their skills have been wrapped up for a couple of years and, hopefully, we are going to release them. I want to see positive, exciting cricket from our batsmen.”

“We have focused a lot on batting since arriving in Bulawayo last week and having six full days of practice at Queens.”

‘No holding back’

“I have stressed that there can be no holding back in Twenty20 cricket. We must be looking for boundaries in every over.”

Zimbabwe have been boosted by the return of Sean Williams, Wellington Masakadza and Richard Ngarava after they missed the Afghanistan tour.

Middle-order batsman Williams was attending to personal matters while spinner Masakadza and pace bowler Ngarava were injured.

The other Group A sides — Singapore, Jersey and the United States — share the same ambition of reaching the World Cup for the first time.

Singapore will start as slight favourites to accompany Zimbabwe to the semi-finals as they are ranked 20th, one place above Jersey and six ahead of the United States.

Jersey coach Neil MacRae is thrilled that the island in the English channel are in contention for a trip to Australia.

“To go to a qualifying tournament and take on professional sides chosen from much bigger populations than ours is a huge opportunity for us,” he said.

The USA squad includes former South Africa fast bowler ‘Rusty’ Theron and much is expected of teenage spinner Vatsal Vaghela, who impressed in a drawn series with Ireland.

Netherlands (18) are the highest-ranked Group B contenders followed by Papua New Guinea (19), Hong Kong (24) and Uganda (25).

The Dutch are hoping to qualify a fifth time and will look to opener Steph Myburgh for runs while the pace attack includes English county cricket trio Brandon Glover, Fred Klasssen and Paul van Meekeren.

Papua New Guinea skipper Assad Vala says he is anticipating plenty of runs from veteran Tony Ura, who hit 10 sixes in a recent win over Malaysia, and young Hila Vare.

Defending champions Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, Namibia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, UAE and the West Indies have already secured places.

India crush England to win T20 series

India beat England
  • India beat England by 49 runs in the second Twenty20 at Edgbaston.
  • England were dismissed for 121 chasing 171 to tie the series.
  • Bhuvneshwar claimed 3-15 while Bumrah and Chahal each took 2 wickets.

India won the three-match series with one game remaining after thrashing England by 49 runs in the second Twenty20 at Edgbaston.

England put on another poor batting display and were dismissed for 121 in 17 overs while chasing 171 to tie the series.

The first delivery of England’s chase resulted in Jason Roy being caught at slip, and skipper Jos Buttler was caught behind on review for four runs in the third over. Both times, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the bowler.

In another thrilling India effort, Bhuvneshwar claimed 3-15 while Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal each took two wickets.

In Buttler’s second game as captain, Moeen Ali led the team in scoring for England with 35, and David Willey’s unbeaten 33 kept them from suffering a worse defeat.

Earlier, England’s bowlers had successfully come back to limit India to 170-8.

At the age of 34, England-debuting seamer Richard Gleeson claimed 3-15, including the significant losses of India captain Rohit Sharma for 31, superstar Virat Kohli for 1, and the perilous Rishabh Pant for 26.

Chris Jordan recorded 4-27, but Ravindra Jadeja’s 46 unbeaten from 29 balls was essential in helping India reach a difficult score that yet appeared reachable.

Prior to Sunday’s series decider at Trent Bridge, India currently enjoy an unbeatable 2-0 advantage. Next week is a three-match one-day international series.

England in problems

Under Eoin Morgan, England has been the gold standard in white-ball cricket for the previous five years, but since Morgan has retired, England has been thoroughly outplayed twice in a row.

Similar to the 50-run loss in Southampton, England’s batting, which is typically their forte in this format, cost them after their bowlers put up a respectable performance.

After a review revealed Buttler had gotten a toe-end on an attempted cut, Roy once more had no response to Bhuvneshwar’s ruthless control of the new ball, and the hosts never looked like recovering.

The manner last man Matt Parkinson had his stumps splattered by a Harshal Patel yorker practically highlighted the gap between the teams. Chris Jordan’s run-out was hectic.

For a variety of reasons, England is lacking regulars, but Buttler and Matthew Mott, their new white-ball coach, have work to do if they want to challenge at the T20 World Cup in October.

Right now, India appears to be the more likely winner because they were able to bring back Kohli, Pant, Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja after they missed the first game.

England head coach Eddie Jones pleased with Billy Vunipola’s progression

Eddie Jones pleased with Billy Vunipola
  • England beat Australia 25-17 in the second Test in Brisbane.
  • Billy Vunipola put on a classic performance to help England.
  • “We are happy with his progress,” Eddie Jones.

In the second Test, Billy Vunipola put on a classic performance to help England defeat Australia, but Eddie Jones believes there is still more to come.

The tenacious Saracens’ number eight scored England’s try in their 25-17 victory in Brisbane, tying the series.

After being away from the team for 15 months, Vunipola has shown head coach Jones what he is capable of.

“Billy is gaining muscle. Although he still has a ways to go, we are happy with his progress,” Jones remarked.

“We selected him based on his improved club form, and he’s gotten better. With us, he is becoming fitter, and his desire to being the greatest player he can be is also getting better,” said the coach.

Vunipola, a key member of the team that won the 2019 World Cup final, had to accept being benched after the 2021 Six Nations because Saracens were competing in the Championship.

“I wasn’t performing up to the standard, therefore I was binned off for a year,” he claimed.

Two of the eights were performing better.

Last season, he returned to his dominant best and attracted attention with his performance for Saracens in the Premiership final.

Sam Simmonds and Alex Dombrandt were both injured and unable to travel, so Vunipola was called back into the lineup and earned his 61st cap in the first Test loss last week.

England, who were dissatisfied with their performance as a pack, made an impressive comeback in Brisbane with Vunipola at the forefront.

“We were really hurting from last week,” he admitted. “Especially near the end of the game, the Australian pack beat us up there up front.”

“To obtain the front-foot ball fell to us as the forwards. When we did that, the intensity of our mauls and scrums varied.”

“We hope to improve upon this week’s performance when we perform the following week. I thought we were doing fairly well in the first half, especially the first 35 minutes, but we allowed them back into the game,” he concluded.

Richards leaves Bayern Munich for Nottingham Forest

Richards leaves Bayern Munich
  • The 24-year-old fullback has signed a four-year contract with the German giants.
  • He is Nottingham Forest’s fifth summer signing.
  • Neco Williams is also on way to the City Ground.

Omar Richards, a fullback, has been signed by Nottingham Forest on a four-year contract after leaving Bayern Munich.

The former England Under-21s defender is reportedly moving for £10 million.

Richards, 24, moved to Bayern from Reading in 2021. He made 17 appearances for them and helped them win the 32nd Bundesliga championship.

The former Fulham junior player expressed his excitement at joining Nottingham Forest at such an exciting time and making his way back to England.

The team has had an amazing few months, and they have high hopes for their return to the Premier League.

“I’ve faced off against Forest before, and their supporters are fantastic, but the City Ground is a fantastic venue that I can now call home. I can’t wait to join the team this week and start getting ready for the next campaign,” Richards said.

Before moving to Germany, Richards played 104 times for the Royals. In 2019, he won one England Under-21s cap.

After Dean Henderson, Moussa Niakhate, Giulian Biancone, and Taiwo Awoniyi, he is Forest’s fifth summer acquisition.

The club and Liverpool have also reached an agreement on a £17 million deal for Wales’ Neco Williams.

Liverpool greeted by huge crowd in Bangkok

Liverpool greeted by huge crowd
  • Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he has never been to a press conference like this.
  • Liverpool arrived in Thailand on Sunday, one day after Manchester United.
  • The two teams will play each other before heading to Australia for pre-season games.

Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, struggled not to draw a comparison while attempting to soak up the traditionally jubilant Thai greeting.

Was it like this when Manchester United arrived yesterday? He questioned.

The welcome England’s top clubs receive when they travel to the Far East is special in some way.

Some people waited for Liverpool for longer than six hours. Numerous people were awaiting outside the Bangkok Airport two hours before their flight was scheduled to land.

Liverpool arrived in Thailand on Sunday, one day after Manchester United, another Premier League competitor. The two teams square off on Tuesday before heading to Australia for preseason games.

There were well over a thousand supporters there when Klopp and his players were prepared to depart the airport and be transported into the city.

Given that it took only approximately three steps to walk from the VIP room exit to the team bus, those who were 50 yards away are unlikely to have even caught a glimpse of their idols.

Others watched Liverpool leave while standing in the center of the crowd and cheering on the remaining fans.

Prior to that, Klopp had led his team in the customary welcome ritual to honor their Thai hosts.

If that was tidy, the scenario quickly descended into chaos when a press conference table was put up, with chairs for Klopp, Vice-captain James Milner, and Captain Jordan Henderson.

Officials made unsuccessful attempts to clear room for questions to be asked in an organized manner but ignored the barrier that was supposed to be for reporters to remain behind. When Klopp prompted for the Manchester United parallel, they had no chance.

He said as he was given a ball, “I have never been to a news conference like this.”

“I appreciate your warm welcome. I’ve only been to Thailand twice; the first time was an hour ago while traveling to Sydney. I’m hoping this time I’ll have some time to spend in the city.”

While Klopp said there is no such thing as a friendly between Liverpool and United, Milner talked about the “energy” of the crowd.

Tuesday should have a boisterous atmosphere at the Rajamangala Stadium if today’s events give any indication.
