Austria probes claim spyware targeted law firms, banks

Austria probe
  • Microsoft security team says malware called Subzero was deployed in 2021 and 2022.
  • Victims include law firms, banks and consultancies in Austria, the UK and Panama.
  • Interior ministry says it knows of the company but has not had business ties with it.

Austria said Friday that it was investigating a report that an Austrian company developed spyware targeting law firms, banks and consultancies in at least three countries.

Microsoft’s security team earlier this week said it found that a malware called Subzero — developed by Vienna-based company DSIRF — was deployed in 2021 and 2022.

“Observed victims to date include law firms, banks and strategic consultancies in countries such as Austria, the United Kingdom and Panama,” it wrote in a blog entry on Wednesday.

Austria’s interior ministry said it had not received reports of any incidents.

“Of course, (intelligence agency) DSN checks the allegations. So far, there is no proof of the use of spy software from the company mentioned,” it said in a statement.

Austria’s Kurier newspaper cited DSIRF as saying that Subzero had not been misused and “was developed exclusively for use by authorities in EU states” and was not commercially available.

DSIRF did not immediately return a request for comment from AFP.

Austria’s interior ministry said it knew of the company but “has not had any business relationships” with it.

Last year several media outlets reported that governments around the world, including in the EU, had used Pegasus spyware made by Israel’s NSO Group to spy on opponents.

Budapest and Warsaw responded that the use of Pegasus was for legitimate national security reasons.

Will Smith expresses heartfelt regret to Chris Rock

Will Smith expresses regret to Chris Rock
  • Will Smith has apologized to Chris Rock for hitting him at the Oscars.
  • He says he was “fogged out” and didn’t realize how many people were hurt.
  • The actor also expressed his desire to apologize to Rock’s family.

In an emotional video that he shared on his various social media platforms, Will Smith expressed his contrition over the smack he received at the Oscars.

Will, who is now 53 years old, mounted the stage at the Oscars on February 24 and hit Chris Rock, who is 57 years old, across the face. Will has now uploaded a video on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook on Friday, in which he apologizes to Rock once more and tells him, “I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

“I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk, and when he is he will reach out,” Will said. “So I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable, and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

Will explained in his Oscars acceptance speech for Best Actor why he didn’t apologize to Rock. Will said, “I was fogged out by that point. It’s all fuzzy.”

The King Richard actor continued by expressing his desire to apologize to Rock’s mother, “I saw an interview that his mother did. That’s one of the things about that moment I didn’t realize, I wasn’t thinking, but how many people got hurt in that moment.”

“So I want to apologize to Chris’s mother; I want to apologize to Chris’s family, specifically Tony Rock [Chris’s younger brother]. We had a great relationship. Tony Rock was my man. This is probably irreparable,” Will said.

After Rock made a joke about Jada’s shaved head during the March ceremony, Will smacked him onstage, earning him a 10-year suspension from ceremonies and associated events from the Academy.

Château Miraval: Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt’s winery case to get more complicated

Angelina Jolie Brad Pitt's winery case
  • Angelina Jolie sold her shares in Chateau Miraval to Russian booze tycoon Stoli.
  • Brad Pitt claims she did it “simply to punish” him and harm him.
  • The actor tried to purchase his former interest in the vineyard.

Recent sources claim that the legal battle between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie over the Chateau Miraval winery may become more complicated.

They are both incredibly obstinate, and this situation is just going to grow more problematic, a source told Us Weekly in this week’s issue.

In 2008, the ex-fiancés decided they would not sell their holdings in the vineyard in the South of France without first consulting one another. They then purchased a majority interest in the business.

In 2016, the former couple broke up, and the Maleficent actress sold her shares in Château Miraval to the Russian booze tycoon Stoli, angering Bullet Train actor.

In a case he filed earlier this year, Pitt alleged that Jolie had not consulted him before selling her shares to Tenute del Mondo, which is run by businessman Yuri Shefler, who is described in court filings as “an aggressive third-party competitor.”

Pitt asserted in his case that the woman who sold her shares did so with the knowledge and intent that Shefler and his associates would try to take over the company to which he had devoted himself and to harm Pitt’s investment in Miraval.

The insider claimed that Brad had never been given the chance to purchase Miraval. However, he was never given the opportunity to do so, even though he would have offered a generous offer.

The person continued, “He feels that is the main reason Angelina sold her stock to them.” Jolie knew that the sale to Stoli was “against” her former husband’s intentions.

In February, a second source told the publication that Pitt tried to purchase his ex-interest wife’s but that she “made the discussions difficult and was not being fair.”

Pitt was “blindsided” when she struck the contract with Stoli but still held out hope that they would come to an understanding.

“He assumed they’d work it out since she knows how important the winery is to him,” the insider said, adding that Jolie did it “simply to punish Pitt. Her intention was to harm him.”

ExxonMobil profits surge to $17.9 bn on lofty commodity prices

ExxonMobil profits
  • US oil giant ExxonMobil saw profits of $4.7 billion in the year-ago period.
  • Revenues rose 68.7 percent to $111.3 billion.
  • Earnings and cash flow benefited from increased production, higher realizations, and tight cost control.

ExxonMobil’s profits nearly quadrupled to $17.9 billion in results released Friday that underscored the elevated state of oil and natural gas prices amid commodity market tightness.

The US oil giant saw profits of $4.7 billion in the year-ago period. Revenues rose 68.7 percent to $111.3 billion.

ExxonMobil joined rivals Royal Dutch Shell and TotalEnergies in releasing massive second-quarter profit increases in the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has pressured energy markets.

ExxonMobil’s results were also boosted by a strong performance in its downstream business amid high gasoline prices and limited refining capacity.

“Earnings and cash flow benefited from increased production, higher realizations, and tight cost control,” said Chief Executive Darren Woods.

“Strong second-quarter results reflect our focus on the fundamentals and the investments we put in motion several years ago and sustained through the depths of the pandemic.”

The oil giant, which endured a series of quarterly losses early in the pandemic when petroleum demand cratered, is prospering following the turn in the market.

During the quarter, ExxonMobil benefited from a 71 percent surge in crude price realizations compared with the year-ago period and a 186 percent increase in natural gas.

The refining business, which lost money in the 2021 quarter, notched $5.3 billion in profits.

Shares of ExxonMobil jumped 2.6 percent to $95.03 in pre-market trading.

Algeria banking group ends restrictions on operations with Spain

Algeria banking group
  • Restrictions on commercial transactions with Spain were lifted by a key Algerian banking association.
  • Restrictions had been in place since Algiers suspended a cooperation treaty last month.
  • Spain’s top diplomat later in the month confirmed there had been a de facto halt to trading ties.

A key Algerian banking association has ended restrictions on commercial transactions with Spain in place since Algiers suspended a cooperation treaty last month, according to a document published by local media.

The measures, namely a “freeze on foreign trade operations of goods and services from and to Spain, are no longer required” starting from Thursday, the ABEF banking association said in a note to the heads of banks and financial establishments.

No official public announcement has yet been made.

The move followed an evaluation of the restrictions on commercial transactions with Spain and consultations “with relevant foreign trade parties”, the ABEF said in the note, without providing further explanation.

On June 8, Algeria suspended a cooperation pact with Spain, prompting a terse rebuke from Brussels which warned there would be consequences for any “discriminatory treatment” of an EU member state.

Hours later, the ABEF had urged its members to restrict business ties with Spain.

“Following the suspension of the treaty of friendship, good neighbourliness and cooperation with Spain, you are requested to freeze all automatic bank payments, whether incoming or outgoing, for goods and services with Spain from Thursday, June 9,” it said at the time.

But Algeria’s diplomatic mission to the European Union had branded the idea of a suspension a Spanish fabrication.

“The alleged measure by the (Algerian) government to stop ongoing transactions with a European partner… only exists in the minds of those who claim it and of those who hastened to stigmatise it,” it said.

Spain’s top diplomat later in the month confirmed there had been a de facto halt to trade ties.

“Despite Algerian statements saying these were malicious fantasies dreamt up by Spain, there is indeed a blocking of operations,” Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said in late June.

Spain in March had publicly recognised Morocco’s autonomy plan for the disputed territory of Western Sahara to end a diplomatic spat with the kingdom, Algeria’s arch-rival.

Algiers, which backs the territory’s Polisario Front independence movement, said in June that Madrid’s move had been “in violation of (Spain’s) legal, moral and political obligations” towards the former Spanish colony, and suspended the 20-year-old cooperation treaty.

Despite the tetchy exchanges, Algeria had confirmed however that it would continue to honour its gas-supply contract with Spain.

Last year, Spanish exports to Algeria totalled 1.8 billion euros ($1.95 billion) while imports amounted to 4.7 billion euros, almost all of which was gas supplies.

Sony unveils Backbone One PlayStation controller; supports Apple iPhone

Sony unveils Backbone One PlayStation controller
  • Sony has created a new controller that enables consumers to play PlayStation games on their iPhones.
  • Backbone One controller requires a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 series console model.
  • An Android version of this controller is anticipated to debut later this year in the U.S., Canada, and other countries.

A brand-new gaming device from Sony has just been released, but it’s designed to work with the Apple iPhone.

The company has created a new controller that enables consumers to play PlayStation games on their iPhones rather than establishing a completely different service.

The PlayStation Edition controller, which is only accessible to owners of Apple iPhones, has recently been released by the Japanese tech giant.

This controller attachment must therefore be avoided for the time being by Android users. This controller functions just as a stand-alone game streaming service because it needs a strong internet connection. Besides this, a PlayStation 4 or a PlayStation 5 series console model is also required.

The PlayStation Remote Play app may be used to access one’s PS4 and PS5 games straight from their cellphones by just plugging their iPhone into the Backbone One controller.

The good news doesn’t stop there; Sony has also stated that this controller will function with other App Store titles and other game streaming platforms that accept controllers.

Examples of such games include Call of Duty: Mobile, Genshin Impact, Fantasian, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

The controller, which is powered directly through the iPhone, is noteworthy because it doesn’t need to be charged separately.

When it launches, Sony will sell the Backbone One PlayStation Edition controller in the US, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy, Sweden, France, Spain, Sweden, Netherlands, and the UK.

It’s interesting to note that an Android version of this controller—which will cost $100 USD like the iPhone controller—is anticipated to debut later in November.

The Huawei S-Tag has a 9-axis sensor that can read the movements of the user’s feet and waist to control running strategies. To assist in developing the ideal running technique, the sensor will examine 13 characteristics.

The device offers customers expert advice based on joint research by Huawei and the Chinese Academy of Sports Sciences by gathering data while users are exercising.

Toyota announces largest-ever Rs. 3.1M price hike

Expected Price Increases

The price increases will go on because of increased freight expenses, declining local currencies, and global logistical difficulties.

As anticipated by Toyota IMC CEO Ali Asghar Jamali, Toyota IMC raised the prices of its vehicles, which is likely to inspire similar actions from other automakers.

In addition, the delayed clearance of the letter of credit for the import of CKD kits has resulted in a serious production crisis for the whole auto industry.

The auto industry is going to be severely impacted by all of these concerns taken together.
