Fisherman hit by “freak wave” had his thigh bone sticking out

Jeremy crawled further to try to get away from the waves, but he was still stuck with no one to help him.

After an hour, a jogger who happened to be a doctor heard his cries. The medic then went to summon the coastguard for assistance.

After 20 minutes, a doctor and a coastguard arrived at the stricken and horrified fisherman, but they had to wait an agonising 20 minutes for the helicopter because the first one had been cancelled and another had been sent from North Devon.

He stated, “I was soaking wet obviously and I was getting really cold. I said to the doctor, ‘You’ve got to get my legs out of this water’ because I was shivering so much I could hardly breathe properly.”

The helicopter arrived around two and a half hours after the tsunami swept him off the rocks, and he was airlifted before being transported to an ambulance parked nearby.

Jeremy was then rushed to Morriston Hospital, where physicians performed surgery on his leg.

He underwent two additional operations the following week and was hospitalised for another week to recover.

As the major caregiver for his 94-year-old father, who is blind and has dementia, Jeremy said he has relied on his two brothers for assistance, but it has been challenging because he can still walk normally.

Jeremy said that the staff at Morriston Hospital had been wonderful, but his family had been unable to locate the doctor who discovered him to thank him as well.

He also stated that when he heals, he intends to personally thank the coastguard for rescuing him that day.
