A virologist has a disgusting warning for people with old pillows (all of us). Many things in our home need replacing. Many things we despise change often.

Sheets and coverings are frequently replaced in bedrooms because they must be kept clean. What about pillows, though?

Occasionally, we switch out our pillowcases. But how frequently do we replace the pillows?

Periodically replacing your pillows is an excellent hygienic practice. However, many of us cling to the same old ones for years after becoming emotionally attached to them.

A well-known virologist has scared people on the internet by saying that our pillows get dirty and dangerous after two years.

Lindsay Broadbent, Dr., tweeted: “Ohh. I love grossing people out by telling them that if their pillow is >2 years old, 10% of the weight is house dust mites and their poo!“

Dr Broadbent’s tweet was a response to a journalist’s question: “Weirdest journo request yet: can I come on the radio to talk about the virology behind how often you should replace the pillow in your bedroom.”
