Google is reportedly working on merging Android and Chrome OS, aiming to create a unified operating system to better compete with Apple’s iPad. According to a new report, the tech giant plans to “turn Chrome OS into Android,” although the specifics remain unclear.

The idea of merging Chrome OS, designed primarily for budget-friendly laptops, with Android, a mobile-first operating system, has sparked curiosity and confusion. Back in June, Google announced Chrome OS would incorporate some Android features. However, this new report suggests a deeper integration is in the works, potentially leading to a full merger.

Critics question how this merger would enhance Google’s ability to rival iPads. Apple’s iPadOS is a refined offshoot of iOS, tailored for tablets, while Google has had years to improve Android for larger screens. It’s unclear how incorporating Chrome OS, an operating system designed for laptops, would bridge this gap.

The project is said to be in its early stages and is expected to take several years to complete. Once finalized, future Chromebooks may run a hybrid system combining Android and Chrome OS.

Interestingly, rumors also suggest Google is developing a new Pixel laptop, which could be among the first devices to feature this integrated OS. Whether this move will revolutionize Google’s approach or add complexity remains to be seen.
