WhatsApp Introduces In-App Contact Storing Option

WhatsApp has rolled out a major update to improve how users manage their contacts, addressing several longstanding issues. Previously, contacts were tied to the phone where the app was installed, which posed challenges if a phone was lost or contacts were not backed up. This setup also made it difficult for users who shared a phone or managed multiple accounts on one device.

To tackle these problems, WhatsApp has introduced a built-in contact manager, allowing users to save their contacts directly within the app. This ensures contacts remain secure and accessible, even when switching devices.

The first phase of this update enables users to store contacts on WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp Desktop for Windows. Over time, Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, plans to extend this feature to other linked devices, making contact management even more seamless.

WhatsApp is also enforcing a new privacy-focused technology called Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS) for securely storing contacts. “IPLS encrypts all stored contact details, such as names and phone numbers, ensuring that only the user can access them.”

In addition, the update introduces a username-based login system, allowing users to create an account without linking it to a phone number. This new feature offers greater privacy and control, further enhancing the overall user experience.
