Eoin Morgan, the former captain of England, has expressed his support for Brendon McCullum to take over as the new coach for England’s limited-overs cricket following Matthew Mott’s resignation.

Morgan, who led England to their first ODI World Cup victory in 2019 by defeating New Zealand, now endorses McCullum for the role of England’s white-ball coach.

Morgan stated, “At this point, the names that come to mind are Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, Stephen Fleming, and Brendon McCullum. I mention him because I’m convinced he’s among the top coaches globally. His impact on the England Test team is evident.”

He further questioned, “The real challenge is integrating this role into a 12-month schedule, but it’s Rob Key’s responsibility to make the position appealing. It’s not about grooming someone new; it’s about securing World Cups and Champions Trophies.”

Morgan emphasized, “We’re not looking for a newcomer. We need the best in the world to assist Jos Buttler and the national team in improving.”

Under McCullum’s guidance as the Test coach, England has become a formidable red-ball team, achieving victories in 17 of their last 25 Test matches, with McCullum working closely alongside Ben Stokes.

Morgan reflected, “It seems McCullum hasn’t been fully considered, which should change. Key ought to engage in that dialogue, given the significant transformation of the Test team and the partnership he’s formed with Stokes.”

“Having played under Brendon’s coaching, I’ve witnessed his contributions to New Zealand cricket and his considerable success. He’s an adaptable and highly esteemed coach who has significantly enhanced the England Test team, which is precisely what you’d expect from a head coach,” Morgan concluded.
