Rahim made a 60-ball century, breaking Shakib’s record
Mushfiqur Rahim, a veteran wicketkeeper-batter, made a 60-ball century on Monday, the fastest by a Bangladesh player. Rahim reached the milestone on the final ball of Bangladesh’s innings in the second One-Day International against Ireland in Sylhet.
His 60-ball century, which included 14 fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 166.66, broke Shakib Al Hasan’s previous best of 63 balls against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in 2009.
Rahim’s century came after he came in to bat in the 34th over of the innings. The wicketkeeper-batsman remained unbeaten on 100 as Bangladesh made 349/6 in 50 overs, their highest ODI total, surpassing the 338 they had made in the previous match of the series.
As Sylhet witnessed another high score, Rahim reached 7000 ODI runs, becoming the third Bangladesh batter to do so after Shakib and Tamim Iqbal. Rahim now has nine ODI centuries, tied with Shakib in a list led by Iqbal, who has 14 tonnes.
Bangladesh scored 338 in the first match against Ireland at this venue two days ago, their highest ODI score to date, surpassing the 333 they scored against Australia at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019.
They won by a stunning 183-run margin, their largest in terms of runs. Here, they beat the total by scoring 349/6, led by Rahim’s stunning century and Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 73 off 77 balls.
