Brazilians bid farewell to Pelé with 24-hour wake and procession of coffin
The funeral of the legendary football player Pelé will take place in Brazil in the stadium in which he played some of the most memorable matches of his career.
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, lost his fight with colon cancer on December 29. His full name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento. He was 82.
Pele’s former club, Santos, has announced in a statement that members of the public will have the opportunity to pay their respects to the legendary player at Vila Belmiro Stadium, located just outside of Sao Paulo.
His coffin is going to be brought through the streets of Santos, and it is going to pass in front of the house where his mother Celeste, who is 100 years old, lives.

Early on Monday morning, the casket carrying the three-time winner of the World Cup will be transported from the Albert Einstein hospital to the field’s centre circle, where it will be laid to rest.
Beginning Monday at 10 am, guests will be permitted to visit, and this will continue for the following 24 hours. On Tuesday, he will be laid to rest at the Memorial Necropole Ecumenica, which is a vertical cemetery in Santos. Only members of his family will be present at the service.
