After criticism of Kylian Mbappe’s contract extension at Paris Saint-Germain, Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said the organization will not be told “what to do.”

Mbappe, a French striker who had been linked with Real Madrid, has signed a lucrative new contract with PSG.

La Liga branded the French club’s contract offer “scandalous” when the 23-year-old elected to stay.

Ceferin told that Uefa has “very rigorous financial fair play standards.”

“Anyone who respects our regulations is welcome to participate in our competitions; anyone who does not respect our rules will not,” Ceferin stated.

“No one, including Real Madrid, will dictate Uefa what to do. They are furious from one perspective, and their offer, as far as I know, was equivalent to [PSG’s].”

The financial fair play rules of Uefa are aimed to ban clubs from spending more over a certain amount over a three-year assessment period.

PSG’s contract offer to Mbappe has been described as an “insult to football” by Javier Tebas, president of Spain’s La Liga, who has tweeted numbers indicating the club’s financial losses.

Qatar Sports Investments is a subsidiary of Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), the Qatari government’s sovereign wealth fund.

Ceferin, who has served as head of European football’s governing body since 2016, says he is “weary” of people complaining about the sport’s willingness to tolerate state-run clubs.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again,” Ceferin said. “Tell me one reason why they shouldn’t be the owners of a team.”

“If you believe that clubs belong to the fans, don’t you believe that the other English clubs have owners as well? They have owners from the United States, the Middle East, and England.”

“So it’s the same problem, and I’m fed up with these baseless charges.”

“I’d like to know who disobeyed the rules, and if you do, you’ll face consequences.”
