A shaggy another crazy trip around the PGA Championship was provided by John Daly.

Because of osteoarthritis in his right knee, the 56-year-old two-time major champion, whose booming drives propelled him to win the PGA in 1991, drove the slopes and swales of Southern Hills in a golf cart that the PGA lets him use.

He was the first off the tee in the chill of the morning and birdied the first hole. Another appeared on No. 5.

There was nostalgia in the air.

Daly spent much of the round on the leaderboard, greeted by chants of “Go Big John” from a crowd that still adores his unique look, which includes a shock of thick white hair, bushy beard, and a belly that hides his belt buckle.

Then there was the late-round meltdown in the growing heat: four bogeys in the final five holes, including three consecutive bogeys on Nos. 16-18.

Daly’s 2-over 72 at the end left him in no mood to talk, so he avoided the post-round interviews.

At the very least, his cart was trouble-free.

When Daly became trapped in the sand at the 2021 PGA Championship on Kiawah Island, fans assisted him.

In Tulsa, his toughest challenge was avoiding a couple of water dangers by going under the ropes and temporarily into the gallery.

He signed his scorecard, which is a plus. Following failing to do so after the second round of the PGA Tour Champions Regions Tradition last week, Daly was disqualified.
