According to a report published Saturday, golf legend Greg Norman plans to come out of retirement and compete in the British Open in July, adding, “I love St Andrews.”

The 67-year-old, a two-time Claret Jug champion who is currently driving a potential Saudi-backed breakaway Super League, has not competed in a major since 2009.

He does, however, intend to return for the tournament’s 150th edition, which will be hosted at the Old Course in St Andrews, Scotland, which is widely regarded as the birthplace of golf.

“I’m filling out the entry form now. I think I’m going,” he told News Corp Australia newspapers.

It remains to be seen whether he tees off or not. Norman will have to fight his way through qualifying or apply for a rare special exemption because he is over the 60-year-old cut-off age for previous champions.

He thinks he has a good case.

“I think I can still get in,” he said. “It’s the 150th. I’m a past Open champion. I love St Andrews.

“If… I would consider going back and teeing off one last time, maybe this is it.”

Norman, known as the “Great White Shark,” completed his 27th British Open in 2009. He won in 1986 and 1993, and he finished in the top ten in a total of ten races.

He was a polarising figure in his time as the chief executive of a breakaway league backed by Saudi Arabia that is designed to compete with the US PGA Tour.

The new league planned to attract the finest players in the world, but a number of them have declined, accusing Norman of turning a blind eye to human rights abuses in Saudi Arabia. He refutes that assertion.

“We are here to play golf, serve fans, grow the game, and give additional opportunities to players,” Norman told News Corp. “Golf is good for the world and that includes Saudi Arabia.”
