ABUJA: Central Nigeria has been hit by widespread devastation as torrential rains triggered horrific floods, leaving at least 115 people dead. This number is feared to rise as rescue efforts continue across the affected regions.

According to foreign news reports, the catastrophic flooding, which began with heavy rainfall from Wednesday night into Thursday morning, has wreaked havoc in Mokwa, a city located along the banks of the Niger River  and its surrounding areas in Niger State.

A spokesperson for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency confirmed that 115 bodies have been recovered so far. However, many individuals remain unaccounted for, and fears are growing that more bodies will be found, particularly given that many were swept away by the raging waters of the Niger River.

Rescue teams are working tirelessly, pulling some bodies from the wreckage of destroyed homes. Local residents are also desperately sifting through the debris, searching for their missing loved ones, even as floodwaters continue to engulf many areas. The situation remains critical as communities grapple with the aftermath of the disaster.
