Police in London announced Thursday that they have issued more than 50 further penalties in connection with the “Partygate” controversy that has rocked Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s cabinet.

The Metropolitan Police claimed the lockdown party probe resulted in “more than 100 referrals for fixed penalty notices.”

The Met stated “over 50” penalties had been issued in its previous statement on April 12. Prime Minister Johnson, his wife Carrie, and Finance Minister Rishi Sunak were among them.

The government has been penalised for a gathering in Downing Street in June 2020 to celebrate the prime minister’s birthday.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has apologised for breaking Covid restrictions, but he has refused to quit after being discovered to be the first UK leader to break the law while in office.

After the Met’s new announcement, sources claimed he had not been fined again.

However, authorities said they were still looking into other suspected violations.

A parliamentary committee is also looking into Prime Minister Johnson’s prior denials of lockdown lawbreaking in the House of Commons.

The parties have inflamed popular discontent with the ruling Conservatives, who have been hammered in previous municipal elections.
