Taapsee Pannu doubles in Guillem Morales and Guillermo del Toro’s version of Julia’s Eyes. The wooded slopes are deep and dark, the dead sister’s house has a sinister staircase, a male neighbour who lives with a silent younger sister is appropriately shifty, an older woman who lives nearby has a secret, and the cop who checks in on Gautami and her husband (Gulshan Devaiah) seems too sure that nothing is wrong.

“Blurr” begins well. Gautami (Taapsee Pannu) has a nightmare about her twin sister Gayatri. A frenzied run to a hillside house ends horribly. The degenerative eye disease-stricken sister died. Now Gautami is convinced someone wants her life, too.

Overall, good. Losing your eyesight, like Gayatri and Gautami, is scary. Someone darting at the edge of your blurring vision is extra alarming. The atmosphere is wonderful, but the characters, especially the lead, are sketchy. How was Gayatri, whose death affects her twin? Same same? Gautami’s husband does more than transport her. Once a helpful character (Thapliyal, effective) telegraphs his blows, even jump scares become predictable.

Too soon, as with most Bollywood thrillers, the plot gets too protracted and the film flattens.
