Kristin Chenoweth, a Tony Award winner, revealed that she was supposed to be at a camp where three young girls were raped and murdered in 1977, in what became known as the Oklahoma Girl Scout murders.

According to People, Chenoweth revealed the terrifying childhood memory in a trailer for the ABC News Studio documentary Keeper of the Ashes: The Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders, which was released on Monday, May 16.

Chenoweth said in the trailer, “This is a story I wish I didn’t have to tell.” Every day, it haunts me. But this story has to be told.”

“I remember I should have been on that trip, but I got sick, and mom said, ‘You can’t go,'” she continued. It has stayed with me my entire life. I was almost one of them.”

Chenoweth went on to say that she decided to return to her hometown in order to find answers, saying, “When I think of those three girls, I wonder what’s the best way to honour them.” That’s why I’d returned home, to finally find answers. ”
