Sean Penn recently returned from shooting a documentary in war-torn Ukraine. Following that, the actor who was supposed to appear at the 2022 Directors Guild of America Awards on Saturday, March 12 was cancelled. According to Just Jared, Penn looked to have skipped the event owing to his COVID-19 diagnosis.

According to sources, it was director Paul Thomas Anderson who broke the news that Penn had tested positive for the virus while on stage accepting an award from Penn. Sean was set to present Paul with his DGA medallion for directing his Oscar-nominated film Licorice Pizza, in which he also appears in a cameo.

Penn’s ex-wife Leila George presented Anderson with the trophy. During his acceptance speech, the director of Licorice Pizza praised Penn’s efforts in the face of the global pandemic. The actor appeared in a cameo role in the film, which also stars Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman. In the film, Penn played a fictitious version of William Holden, a former Hollywood star.

Penn recently returned from shooting a documentary in Ukraine during the Russian invasion. While in Ukraine, the actor also met with President Zelenskyy, who he spoke about in an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper following his return, saying that he was impressed by the President’s fortitude. During his trip in Ukraine, the actor also posted a photo on social media of himself travelling for miles towards the Poland border.
