On Wednesday at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Guillermo del Toro debuted a beautiful scene and a new teaser trailer from his upcoming stop-motion Pinocchio.

The craftsmanship — from the stylized character and production design to the lighting and sound — makes for a rich rendering of the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s reimagining of Carlo Collodi’s classic 1883 novel The Adventures of Pinocchio, which follows a wooden marionette created by bereaved woodcarver Geppetto.
When Geppetto (voiced by David Bradley) hears disturbance in his attic, he wakes up next to a bottle and a damaged picture frame in his woodcarving studio. “Who goes there?” he wonders as he ascends the rickety stairway to the attic, where he discovers Pinocchio (Gregory Mann). “You requested that I live. The uncomfortable wooden youngster responds, “I’m your son.”
Cricket (Ewan McGregor) arrives and informs Geppetto that Pinocchio is telling the truth, and Geppetto can’t believe what he’s hearing.
Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Ron Perlman, Finn Wolfhard, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, and Burn Gorman round out the voice ensemble.

Del Toro and Mark Gustafson (The PJs) are directing, and del Toro and Patrick McHale wrote the screenplay. The stop-motion project is being made at Shadow Machine in Portland, Oregon, and is being produced by Del Toro, Lisa Henson, Alex Bulkley, Corey Campodonico, and Gary Ungar.
Pinocchio will be available on Netflix in December. Meanwhile, in September, a competing remake from Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks will premiere on Disney+.
