PM calls emergency NSC meeting after India suspends Indus Waters Treaty

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday asked the Afghan government once again to act against the TTP carrying out terror activities inside Pakistan from across the Afghan border, calling it unacceptable and a red line for his country.

“Unfortunately, TTP is operating from Afghanistan and carrying out terror attacks and killing innocent people inside Pakistan. This cannot go on. We have conveyed to the Afghan government that we desire good ties with them but TTP should be stopped from killing our innocent people. This is a red line. TTP operating from there against Pakistan is unacceptable,” the prime minister said in his opening remarks at the meeting of the federal cabinet chaired by him.

He said that Afghanistan was a neighboring country with a thousands of kilometers-long long shared border. We desire cordial ties with each other and cooperation in trade, economy and other sectors, he added.

The prime minister asked the Afghan government to formulate a solid strategy as Pakistan was ready to talk with them on the issue. But the policy of talks and allowing TTP to operate against Pakistan can’t go simultaneously, he remarked.

He said that the armed forces and the law enforcement agencies of Pakistan were all-time ready to ensure the country’s peace and security. A few days ago, 16 FC personnel were martyred and the forces eliminated also several terrorists in North Waziristan operations on Thursday, in which an army major was also martyred.

Referring to the 17th anniversary of her martyrdom observed on the day, the prime minister remembered Benazir Bhutto as a courageous lady with political sagacity and acumen. TTP could become al-Qaeda’s arm to destabilize Afghanistan’s neighbours: Pakistan warns

TTP

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has warned the international community that the Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), “the largest terrorist group” operating in Afghanistan, could emerge as al-Qaeda’s arm with a regional and global terrorist agenda.

“Terrorism within and from Afghanistan poses the single most serious threat to the country, to the region, and to the world,” Ambassador Usman Jadoon, acting permanent representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, told the UN Security Council.

“While the AIG (Afghan Interim Government) is fighting ISIL-K (Daesh), the threat from various other terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda, the TTP and others has yet to be addressed,” he said while speaking in a debate on the situation in Afghanistan.

Highlighting the ranking of 6,000-fighters strong TTP as the largest, listed terrorist organization, Ambassador Jadoon said, “With safe havens close to our border, it poses a direct and daily threat to Pakistan’s security.”

“In countering the TTP’s cross border operations, our security and border officials have confiscated some of the modern weapons acquired by the AIG from stocks left behind by foreign forces,” the Pakistani envoy said, adding that the terrorist group also receives external support and financing “from our adversary” — an obvious reference to India.

The TTP, he said, was fast emerging as an umbrella organization for other terrorist groups, aimed at destabilizing Afghanistan’s neighbours.

“We have evidence of its collaboration with other terrorist groups like the Majeed Brigade that is utilizing terrorism to disrupt Pakistan’s economic cooperation with China, especially CPEC,” Ambassador Jadoon said.

“Given its long association with al-Qaeda, the TTP could emerge as Al-Qaeda’s arm with a regional and global terrorist agenda.”

Pakistan, he declared would take all necessary national measures to eliminate these threats, cooperating with regional and international efforts to root out the menace of terrorism.

About Taliban’s new directive prohibiting women and girls from attending public and private medical institutes in Afghanistan, Ambassador Jadoon said the international community expects the AIG to fulfill its declared commitments on human rights and political inclusion.

The Pakistani envoy also called for the Doha Process framework to go beyond counter-narcotics and the private sector; Afghanistan’s challenges, including terrorism, human rights and widespread poverty, are also affecting the region.

TTP’s Afghan based terror attacks unacceptable: PM

TTP

ISLAMABAD:  Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the terror attacks in Pakistan involving Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) using Afghan soil saying that was “unacceptable” as Pakistan was fully prepared to protect its citizens but desired to resolve the matter peacefully.

The prime minister, in his remarks at the meeting of the federal cabinet chaired by him, pointed out the surge in terror incidents, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan causing the killing of the personnel of the army, police and civil armed forces.

He called the terrorism wave a machination against Pakistan as it was taking place at a time when the coalition government was making efforts for the country’s development as it reached a Staff Level Agreement with IMF despite challenges and announced a three-month relief package for 96% of domestic power consumers.

Highlighting the role of Afghanistan in the surged wave of terrorism, the prime minister said the government was in interaction with them as Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif also visited there.

“But how is it possible that we hosted millions of their people here without any complaint? We treated them like our brothers and never considered them as a burden. But we were rewarded in the form of TTP attacks on our citizens to mar the country’s peace and business. This is not acceptable,” he remarked.

He said Pakistan was ready to face any kind of situation as its valiant armed forces had sacrificed their lives to safeguard the country and its people.

Prime Minister Shehbaz also highlighted that the perpetrators of the May 9 riots, who had also attacked parliament, PTV and besieged the PM House in the past, had resorted to new tactics to malign the country and its armed forces as a malicious campaign was run against Army Chief General Asim Munir from the official website of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
