Rice Planting Day in Nepal Brings Joyful Feasts for Farmers

Rice Planting Day in Nepal Brings Joyful Feasts for Farmers

Across Nepal, thousands of farmers and their families joyously marked the annual paddy festival by engaging in rice planting, revelling in muddy fields, and indulging in special feasts. This festive occasion attracted not only the farming community but also villagers, city dwellers, and tourists visiting the Himalayan nation.

Rice holds significant importance as a staple food for millions of Nepalese, with the crop typically being planted once a year in July and harvested approximately four months later. To welcome the much-needed rain for rice cultivation, farmers and their families sang traditional songs and expressed gratitude to the gods for timely precipitation.

After meticulously planting rows of rice, they gleefully frolicked in the muddy fields, playfully smearing mud and sand on each other, and danced in merriment.

The festivities culminated with a grand feast, featuring traditional dishes such as “dahi chiura” – a combination of yoghurt and beaten rice. Elsewhere in the country, people celebrated at home by relishing yoghurt and puffed rice with mangoes and bananas. In an effort to promote the importance of rice farming, the government declared National Paddy Day a holiday and encouraged individuals to continue or return to the agricultural profession, as many are increasingly pursuing alternative careers.

The annual paddy festival not only serves as a cultural celebration but also serves as a reminder of the vital role of agriculture in sustaining the nation and preserving its rich traditions.

Nepal restricts individual hikers throughout the nation

Nepal
  • Tourists who want to trek in isolated areas must either work with a government-approved guide or travel in a group.
  • The tourism director claims that these businesses that do not file with the government steal jobs from Nepalis and do not pay taxes.
  • The new law is being met with mixed reactions from the climbing and trekking society.

Five years after outlawing solo climbers on Mount Everest, Nepal’s government has now made the prohibition applicable throughout the entire nation.

Eight of the world’s tallest summits are found in Nepal, but the country is also well-known for its stunning rural trekking areas. Going forward, tourists who want to trek in isolated areas must either work with a government-approved guide or travel in a group.

The expense of search and rescue operations for lone hikers who get lost is substantial, despite the fact that trekking is one of the nation’s largest revenue generators.

Mani R. Lamichhane, director of the Nepal Tourism Board, tells that when traveling alone, there is no one to assist you in an emergency. “The infrastructure is inadequate in the remote mountains, but it is acceptable if they are traveling in the cities.”

“Even the government cannot monitor tourists when they go missing or are discovered dead because they have traveled remote routes,” continues Lamicchane.

In addition to the difficulties brought on when hikers disappear in rural regions, Lamichhane claims that unlicensed tour operators are also a problem. The tourism director claims that these businesses that do not file with the government steal jobs from Nepalis and do not pay taxes.

“In a few instances, the trekking association has asked us to put an end to these illegal trekking activities. For a very long period, tourism associations have been requesting this,” he claims.

The new law is being met with mixed reactions from the climbing and trekking society.

The decision makes sense, according to Ian Taylor, proprietor of a reputable guide service with a long history in Nepal, as more and more people try challenging climbs there.

In the past few years, “things have drastically altered in the area,” he tells.

Only seasoned hikers and climbers could be found in the area in the past; many of them were fully self-sufficient and traveled without guides.

“However, the number of travelers in the area has significantly increased, and more visitors than hikers are among them. They require the help of seasoned guides because they are unable to survive on their own in the wilderness.

Taylor adds that the decision to enact a broad ban was made because the Nepali government lacks the resources to examine each individual visa applicant individually.

It is very disappointing that it has come to this as someone who loves the mountains and traveling to mountainous areas of the globe, Taylor continues.

“We never want to see restrictions on people’s access to the slopes. However, because of how unique the circumstance is in Nepal, adjustments are necessary.

Massive earthquake hits Nepal killing one, tremors felt in India

earthquake
  • The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.9.
  • Cattle and farm animals were also buried by the earthquake.
  • Nepal experiences earthquakes frequently.

At least one person has been killed and two others injured after an earthquake struck western Nepal, with authorities still searching for damage.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the 5.6-magnitude earthquake’s epicenter was in the hilly and isolated Bajura district, 400 kilometers (250 miles) west of Kathmandu.

The tremors were felt as far away as India’s capital New Delhi, where buildings briefly shook, at around 2:43 pm local time (08:58 GMT) on Tuesday.

“There was a significant tremor. There were a lot of people on the streets. “There was a terror for a while,” said Nain Rawal, a district official in Bajura.

According to district chief Pushkar Khadka, one woman was killed, two people were injured, and up to 40 houses were damaged.

“It’s challenging to obtain complete information because of how remote our region is. By tomorrow, we hope to have a complete picture of the losses and damages, Khadka said, adding that most of the mud- and stone-built homes in the affected villages were either completely destroyed or developed cracks.

Since many of the villages in the district are walkable, details were still hazy, but soldiers and police rescuers had already been sent, according to Khaki.

According to Deb Bahadur Rokaya, a village official from Gaumul, the deceased woman had climbed a hill to gather fodder when she was killed by a stone that fell after becoming loose due to the tremors.

Cattle and farm animals were also buried by the earthquake.

The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.9, according to Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center.

Indian users of social media reported experiencing strong tremors that rattled ceiling fans and other fixtures.

Nepal, which has the majority of the world’s highest peaks and is largely covered in mountains, experiences earthquakes frequently.

Another earthquake of magnitude 5.6 that struck Nepal’s western district of Doti in November claimed the lives of six people.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the nation in April 2015 claimed the lives of nearly 9,000 people and destroyed more than 500,000 homes.
