Malaysian conglomerate YTL Power International (YTLP.KL) has announced a partnership with US tech giant Nvidia (NVDA.O) to develop artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in Southeast Asia, with an investment of $4.3 billion.
The first phase of the project is expected to be operational by mid-2024 and will be hosted at YTL’s data center park in Kulai, Johor.
This collaboration will see the companies:
- Build Malaysia’s fastest supercomputers: These supercomputers will utilize Nvidia AI chips, providing the country with a significant boost in computational power.
- Develop a large language model in Malay: YTL Power International will leverage Nvidia’s AI cloud computing platform to build a large language model specifically for the Malay language.
- Strengthen Southeast Asia’s AI ecosystem: This project will contribute to the growth of AI technology and expertise in the region.
- Support Malaysia’s ambitions as a semiconductor manufacturing power: The partnership with Nvidia complements Malaysia’s recent multi-billion dollar investments from other global semiconductor players like Intel and Infineon.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim welcomed the collaboration, stating that it represents a significant investment in Malaysia and highlights the country’s attractiveness as a destination for technology giants.
The Nvidia and YTL Power AI project is expected to have a major impact on Malaysia’s economy, creating jobs and driving innovation in the technology sector. It also sends a positive signal to other potential investors in the region.
