- Vatican issues updated guidelines for the LGBT community.
- Transgender individuals now allowed to undergo baptism.
- Transgender people can serve as godparents and wedding witnesses.
The Vatican’s doctrinal office has released updated guidelines, following Pope Francis‘ efforts to create a more welcoming environment for the LGBT community.
The new stance permits transgender individuals to undergo baptism and act as godparents or witnesses at weddings within the Catholic Church.
However, the Vatican emphasizes that these decisions should not lead to public scandal or disorientation among the faithful.
The guidance also addresses questions regarding the baptism of children from same-sex parents and the eligibility of individuals in same-sex relationships as godparents.
While the Church remains unwavering in its stance on same-sex marriage, Pope Francis encourages blessings for same-sex couples with “pastoral charity.” American Jesuit priest Fr. James Martin hails the move as a significant step towards recognizing transgender individuals within the Catholic faith.
