A terrible video of a student wheeling a woman with special needs down stairs has gone viral.
A wheelchair-bound woman was surrounded by two other people in the video, including Carson Briere, a hockey player and the son of former Philadelphia Flyers right wing Daniel Briere.
The offender, a Mercyhurst University student, sat in the wheelchair before standing up and flinging it to the ground.
The wheelchair’s owner was reportedly in the restroom when it occurred.
Once the video went viral, Mercyhurst University announced that they had opened an investigation into the situation. The college also stated that the student had expressed regret for his disruptive behavior.
“Mercyhurst University has heard a considerable outcry regarding the social media video of student Carson Briere showing him pushing an unoccupied wheelchair down a flight of stairs,” Mr. Briere issued a statement today accepting responsibility for his actions, acknowledging that his behaviour displays a’serious lack of judgement’ and that he is ‘truly regretful.’ The actions seen in the video break our hearts and fall short of our Compassionate belief in each person’s intrinsic dignity.
“We pray for and are in solidarity with the victim and all persons with disabilities who correctly find actions like this to be terribly hurtful. Our Mercy heritage also reminds us that students, like all individuals, who make terrible decisions need opportunities to learn, adjust their behaviours, and atone for their wrongdoing.”
Carson Briere has also been suspended from the athletic department at the university.
