Poland to send four fighter jets to Ukraine soon

  • Poland is the first NATO nation to send aircraft to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion.
  • Providing four Mig fighter jets to bolster air defense systems.
  • And support the army in the spring counteroffensive.

Poland will be the first NATO nation to send aircraft to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion last year when it sends four Mig fighter jets from the Soviet period.

Others would be given over later, according to Polish President Andrzej Duda, who stated that they would be sent in the upcoming days.

The additional jets are a welcome addition to Ukraine’s air defense, but they won’t likely end the conflict.

Olena Kondratyuk, the deputy speaker of the Ukrainian parliament, expressed her hope that more nations will follow.

Other NATO nations intend to deliver the Soviet-era aircraft, whose pilots are trained in Ukraine.

Ukraine has repeatedly requested advanced combat jets like the F-16 from Western nations.

Ukrainian pilots are being trained by the UK on NATO-approved aircraft. But, it has cautioned that providing Western jets would only ever be a long-term solution due to the lengthy training periods.

Prior to this, President Biden had banned the US from sending jets to Ukraine.

Ukraine was thought to have 120 combat-capable aircraft at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, mostly ageing Mig-29s and Su-27s.

According to President Duda, Poland still has a dozen or so Mig 29 aircraft from the Soviet era flying today.

We need them to bolster our air defense systems and support our army in the spring counteroffensive, Ukrainian MP Kira Rudik told the Media.

“It’s also a good sign to everybody that getting fighter jets to Ukraine is not something unspeakable or surreal – that this is something that can happen; that the only thing that is needed to make it happen is political will.”

One of the major exporters of military hardware to Ukraine is Poland. It is currently substituting more modern American and Korean models for its outdated Soviet-era aircraft.
