- The Michael B. Jordan-starring film surpasses its Creed predecessors for the best sophomore weekend.
- The boxing drama, which serves as Jordan’s directorial debut, is currently on track.
With a championship-caliber debut last week, it is obvious that Creed III simply cannot be stopped. Creed III, the most recent installment in the Rocky Balboa spin-off series, retained its competitive edge and earned $7.52 million on Friday at domestic box offices from a little over 4,000 screens. According to the numbers, it will likely earn a projected $26.7 million by the conclusion of the weekend. The Michael B. Jordan-starring film surpasses its Creed predecessors for the best sophomore weekend of any Creed spin-off movie, continuing its winning streak.
The boxing drama, which serves as Jordan’s directorial debut, is currently on track to earn an incredible $150 million from North American theatres, which is more excellent news. Following a dominating opening weekend in theatres, Creed III had a good second weekend. The movie defied predictions that it would only gross $40 million domestically in its first week by earning an astounding $58.7 million. Jordan’s message of hesitant brotherhood and enduring loyalty must have struck a chord with viewers since the movie achieved the largest sports movie opening in American film history. As it concluded its first week in theatres with a confident $100.4 million at the global box office, the success rang boldly abroad as well.
It’s not surprising that Creed III is still enjoying tremendous success on a global scale because it follows in the footsteps of all previous Rocky films by using boxing as a metaphor to explore real-world problems. Adonis “Donnie” Creed (Jordan) retires seven years after the events of Creed II, having earned his place in boxing history with Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) and his father Apollo (Carl Weathers).
Donnie’s seemingly ideal existence, which includes fame around the world and a lovely family, is upended when his long-lost pal “Diamond Dame” Anderson shows up (Jonathan Majors). As he sets his sights on reclaiming the life he feels Donnie stole from him after serving a significant amount of time in jail, Dame makes it very apparent that the past is still very much a part of the present for him.
Fans of Rocky and newcomers to the franchise alike have largely praised the original plot. It appears that the Creed universe may expand as a result of the film’s popularity, something Jordan previously stated he was very open to. Jordan reportedly met with Amazon to go through a number of potential spin-off projects in both cinema and television, according to a report from Deadline. An anime series and character-focused ventures are reportedly among the stories that are being considered. There is one on Amara, Donnie’s daughter (Mila Davis-Kent), who debuted in Creed III. Whatever happens next, it is obvious that this is only the beginning.
