Joaquin Phoenix is back as the Joker, and this is no joke. The 48-year-old actor was photographed on the location of his upcoming musical sequel to 2019’s Joker, dubbed Joker: Folie à Deux, on Saturday in downtown Los Angeles.
Phoenix returned as Arthur Fleck/Joker, sporting the trademark curly hairstyle and smudged clown makeup for the part. He wore a dusty grey suit over a similarly soiled-looking tan shirt, along with brown shoes.
The Oscar winner was seen in one set of photographs dashing down the street beside a man who was dressed as the Joker in a red-and-yellow outfit with full clown makeup and green hair.
A bleeding ear on Phoenix seemed to indicate that he was filming a scene featuring a little trouble for his nasty character, in addition to his filthy suit and race down the street.
Warner Bros unveiled the official First Look photo of Phoenix and co-star Lady Gaga, who plays Harley Quinn in the movie, to commemorate Valentine’s Day last month.
Gaga, 36, posted the image on social media first. The photo shows Phoenix and the musician-turned-actress just after a passionate kiss, with her red lipstick all over his face.
Phoenix plays the infamous Batman antagonist once more in the movie, and Gaga plays Harley Quinn (also known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel), who has been the Joker’s henchwoman and love interest since they first met when she worked as his psychiatrist at Gotham City’s Arkham Asylum.
In June 2022, reports made official Gaga’s participation in the movie, stating that she was in negotiations to play Harley. The news was initially reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The sequel will be directed by Todd Phillips, who also helmed Joker. The plot’s specifics are still unknown, but the phrase Folie à Deux alludes to a mental condition or delusion that two people share, implying that Harley and the Joker may be up to mischief together.
Phillips, 52, tweeted a first-look image of Phoenix, who received an Academy Award for his work in the original movie, in the sequel back in December 2022.
The image depicts Fleck, a Phoenix character, shaving while standing at a faucet at Arkham Asylum. “Day 1. Our youngster “The photo was captioned by Phillips.
