Several areas of the UK will now be subject to snow and ice warnings over the next few days. Up until Wednesday morning, portions of north-east Scotland and England are still under yellow weather warnings.
On Monday, the Met Office released updated updates that are applicable to much of the UK for the next five days.
On Thursday and Friday, there could be “severe interruption” due to heavy snow in the north and center of the nation.
Between 21:00 GMT tonight and 10:00 GMT on Tuesday, a new warning of ice and some snow will be in effect for parts of the Midlands, East, south of England, and Wales.
According to the Met Office, this might cause “challenging travel conditions” in some areas.
It warned that some roads and trains in these regions would be impacted, and travelers should plan for lengthier commutes.
Overnight, a similar warning that covers a large portion of Northern Ireland is also in effect.
Another warning states that snow is likely to hinder transport in some areas of southern England and Wales on Wednesday.
Several sections of Scotland, northern England, the Midlands, north Wales, and Northern Ireland are under further warnings for heavy snow on Thursday and Friday.
Travel and other daily activities may be hampered by the weather.
On Sunday evening, the first Met Office warning was issued for sections of Scotland, including Aberdeen, Dundee, the Highlands, Orkney, and Shetland.
The warning that was in effect on Monday covers more of Scotland and a stretch of north-east England that reaches as far as Yorkshire and Newcastle upon Tyne.
The warning area expands to include Strathclyde, more of Yorkshire and the Humber, and the East Midlands on Tuesday. Regular snowfall is anticipated.
Snow could create delays on local roads, as well as cancellations of trains and flights, according to the Met Office. It also cautioned about the possibility of falls and slips on ice surfaces.
It said that there was a “slight probability” that phone and power services could be shut off for remote populations.
The UK Health Security Agency’s earlier warnings are still in effect. They give notice that cold weather is likely to linger throughout the week across all of England.
The organisation advised people to check on loved ones since it warned that this might have a “severe impact” on the health of those who are susceptible to the cold.
It suggested that people over 65 or those with pre-existing illnesses heat their houses to at least 18C.
