WhatsApp‘s latest Android beta version has a two panel layout for tablets. In most situations, such new features are evaluated in the beta channel for a period of time (weeks or even months), before being made available to everyone.
We obviously hope that the same logic applies here, as the dual panel interface makes a lot more sense on tablets than merely an expanded version of the phone UI.
Take a look:

The first WhatsApp version for Android tablets was released for beta testers last year, but it lacked the split view. The new UI, which appears to be rolling out now for those in the beta, may be seen in the updated screenshot above.
Interestingly, the chat list is always accessible on the left, allowing you to swiftly switch between chats without having to go back. The Calls and Status tabs also support a split view.
Hopefully, this will be released from beta testing soon.
