Prince William has hailed commentator John Motson as “a legend whose voice was football” following his death at the age of 77.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that John Motson OBE died peacefully in his sleep today,” Motson’s family said in a statement on Thursday.
On Thursday, the Prince of Wales led tributes to Motson, tweeting that he was “very sad” to learn of his death.
“Very sad to hear about the passing of John Motson – a legend whose voice was football,” Kate Middleton’s husband wrote. “My heart goes out to his family and friends.”

During his distinguished 50-year career with , Motson, nicknamed “Motty,” became synonymous with English football. After covering ten World Cups, ten European Championships, 29 FA Cup finals, and over 200 England matches, he retired in 2018.
Motson joined Match of the Day in 1971 and has since commented on over 2,500 games. For five decades, his enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the game, its players, and managers earned him a place in the hearts of fans.
