Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu, 74, was named the upcoming president-elect of Bangladesh by the nation’s Election Commission.

Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal told reporters in the nation’s capital, Dhaka, that the candidate of the ruling Awami League (AL) party won the 22nd presidential election without any opposition.

On Sunday, the presidential election’s nominating process came to a close.

In the 350-seat national parliament, the AL party had 302 members, and no other party had enough supporters to put out a presidential candidate.

Shahabuddin, a former district judge who was born in 1949 and hails from the northern Pabna district, also served on the AL’s Advisory Council.

He was a freedom fighter in the nation’s 1971 struggle for independence and a commissioner of the nation’s independent Anti-Corruption Commission.

Abdul Hamid, whose term ends on April 24, will be replaced by Shahabuddin.

The country’s constitution mandates that the presidential election take place 60 to 90 days before to the conclusion of each five-year term.

According to the nation’s constitution, Hamid is not eligible to run for president again because he was chosen for two terms.
