Who better to start the big game than Sheryl Lee Ralph?
The 66-year-old “Abbott Elementary” actress performed the black national anthem before the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl matchup on Sunday, singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
She sang the hymn, which was initially penned as a poem in 1900 by NAACP leader James Weldon Johnson and brother John Rosamond Johnson while donning a flaming red jumpsuit by black-owned fashion label Harbison Studio and jewelry by Nikos Koulis.
Puffed off-the-shoulder sleeves, ornate gold buttons, a dramatic train, and matching opera gloves were all part of the color-blocked ensemble.
“Iconic occasion. Famous female. the iconic appearance. I’m GLAD. Charles Harbison, a designer, posted a video of Ralph singing while wearing one of his vibrant creations on Instagram.
The song’s performance by Ralph wowed the audience, with one fan tweeting, “Miss Sheryl Lee Ralph looks GLORIOUS. Additionally, she adds color to every single syllable.
I didn’t realize Deena Jones was going to attend the Super Bowl tonight! said another fan in reference to Ralph’s “Dreamgirls” role. All right, Sheryl Lee Ralph. #SuperBowl.”
Ivy Coco Maurice, her 27-year-old daughter, has been styling her mother for a number of award presentations recently, including the 2023 Golden Globes last month, and is responsible for Ralph’s gorgeous appearance.
Now that Ralph’s performance is over, she can enjoy the game and Rihanna’s halftime show. The actress met the pop star earlier this week, and she even revealed to People that the Bad Gal inspired her to get Fenty Beauty makeup.
Perhaps modeling for Rihanna’s cosmetic brand will be her next job.
