After discovering an unexploded bomb close to a school in Invergordon , a group of metal detectorists—among them a man using it for the first time—sparked an alert.

Homes in Invergordon, in the Highlands, were evacuated as a result of the finding at a wartime air raid shelter, and three schools were shut down out of caution.

Ryan Junor, a novice detectorist, and his son Shay were among the party looking for antiquated artefacts.

“We certainly weren’t looking for bombs,” he said.

Royal Navy explosives experts have removed the ordnance for disposal.

After posting images of their discovery on Facebook, the gang, which had made their discovery on Tuesday night, was shocked to learn that they might have dug up an antique mortar.

He said: “We were only looking for coins, bits and bobs. Invergordon is littered with artefacts.”

Early on Wednesday, a cordon was established, and people were warned to avoid the area near Gordon Terrace and Academy Road.

As a result, the Invergordon Academy, Park Primary, and South Lodge Primary were closed. More than 730 students are affected by the school closings.

Many homes and businesses, according to police, were evacuated.

The impacted roads have subsequently been reopened once the restriction was lifted.
