Iran earthquake causes hundreds injured and two dead

  • A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Iran on Saturday night local time.
  • The earthquake hit the city of Khoy, West Azerbaijan province, in northwest Iran.
  • At least 580 people were injured and 70 villages damaged.

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Iran on Saturday night local time resulted in at least two fatalities and more than 500 injuries.

According to the Iranian Seismological Center in Tehran, an earthquake struck the city of Khoy in the northwest Iranian province of West Azerbaijan at approximately 9:44 p.m. local time.

Iran‘s semi-official Mehr news agency said that 70 villages were devastated and at least 580 people were hurt. Operations to provide aid and assess damage are stated to be under progress.

The earthquake was also recorded by the USGS as being 5.9 in magnitude

“The tremor was so strong that it was felt in many regions of West Azerbaijan Province, causing concern among residents. It was also felt in several cities, including the provincial capital of Tabriz in the neighboring province of East Azerbaijan,” IRNA reported.
