Batman has Robin, Rick has Morty. How about Bono and The Edge from U2? Just in time for the release of U2’s Songs of Surrender, Disney+ will debut a documentary special on the streaming service on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day, featuring the members of the Irish rock band and David Letterman.
The documentary Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, which takes its title from a song on their 1984 album The Unforgettable Fire, will mainly concentrate on the extraordinary friendship between Bono and The Edge that has lasted for four decades. It will also follow Letterman as he makes his first trip to Dublin. And who better to lead him on that tour than Bono and The Edge, two musical legends? Listen to “Cedarwood Road,” “Running to Stand Still,” and “The Crystal Ballroom” to hear how Dublin has been a recurring theme in U2’s music, right up there with America. Bono even mentions Dublin in the teaser for the upcoming special, saying, “Dublin is a real part of our story that’s in our songs.”
A brief teaser for the docu-special was posted on January 13 to build anticipation. Snippets of Bono, The Edge, and Letterman roaming the streets of Dublin, meeting fans, and playing are shown as an acoustic version of U2’s 2005 song, “Vertigo,” plays in the background.
Lately, Bono has kept himself very busy. In Sing 2 from the previous year, he played the lead character Clay Calloway. His autobiography, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, was published in November. Additionally, Bono had embarked on an original book tour that made stops in cinemas all across Europe and America. Similar to Bruce Springsteen’s Springsteen on Broadway, the performance was intimate, giving Bono the chance to talk about a few of the songs from his memoir while simultaneously singing. The tour’s second part, which will consist of a residency at the Beacon Theatre in New York City, is scheduled to begin this spring with performances in April and May.
U2 has been in the studio working on Songs of Surrender despite not touring or releasing a full album since 2017’s Songs of Experience. However, the band did contribute a song to the Sing 2 soundtrack. Before the 2017 and 2019 legs of their Joshua Tree anniversary tour, U2 hardly ever looked back at their career, but Songs of Surrender will be a thorough examination of their entire repertoire going all the way back to their 1980 debut album, Boy.
40 new renditions of U2 songs will be included on the album, including some of their best-known songs like “With or Without You” as well as some of their lesser-known tracks like “Red Hill Mining Town.” “Pride (In The Name Of Love),” the first song from the upcoming album, was just made public.
