Jair Bolsonaro supporters invade Supreme Court, Congress in Brasilia

According to media footage, the supporters of Jair Bolsonaro on Sunday invaded the Supreme Court, the Congress building, and surrounded the presidential palace in Brasilia.

In a nod to the supporters of former American President Donald Trump’s invasion of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, Several thousand demonstrators forced their way inside the Congress and the Supreme Court, shattering furniture as they were seen on television. About 3,000 people, according to local media, were involved.

Many of the demonstrators contest the outcome of the election on October 30 in which Jair Bolsonaro was defeated by leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Many of his ardent fans concur with the former president, who frequently cast doubt on the validity of the nation’s electronic voting system in the absence of supporting proof.

48 hours before his term as president ended, Bolsonaro flew from Brazil to Florida.

Lula spent the weekend in Sao Paulo and was traveling to the state’s interior.

The Workers Party of Lula requested that the chief public prosecutor direct the use of public security personnel to disperse the protesters.
