Russia rejects Ukraine’s calls for UN Security Council removal

  • Russia rejected Ukraine’s UNSC withdrawal request (UNSC).
  • Ukraine urged banning Russia from the UNSC and UN system.
  • Maria Zakharova: Dogs bark, but the caravan continues.

Russia’s foreign ministry has denounced Ukraine’s calls to have Russia removed from the UN Security Council (UNSC), according to Russian state news agency.

In a statement released on Monday, the Ukrainian foreign ministry argued that Russia ought to be barred from both the UNSC and the UN system altogether.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, has previously demanded that Russia be expelled from the United Nations.

Do nothing, said Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, in response to Kyiv’s declaration on Wednesday. This is the exact situation when dogs bark but the caravan continues.

When asked about Moscow’s response on Wednesday, Zakharova gave the remarks to the Sputnik radio station.

The foreign ministry of Ukraine claims that there have been “severe violations of the norms and principles of international law as well as for crimes perpetrated on the territory of Ukraine, in particular for war crimes and crimes against humanity, as well as the crime of genocide.”

It implies that after Russia “fulfils the prerequisites for membership in the Organization,” it could be recommended for re-admission to the UN.
