The first ‘Stranger Things’ spin-off being developed by Netflix will be an anime.
The anime series will be called Stranger Things: Tokyo and is being marketed as the “first” offshoot of Stranger Things, according to What’s on Netflix (via Twitter).
When they renewed their Netflix contract earlier in 2022, the Duffer Brothers already confirmed a spin-off. The spin-off will be “1,000% different” from the original, according to Matt Duffer, who also stated it will be a “narrative that ties to the Stranger Things world, but it really is more about how we’re delivering that story.”
The series will purportedly depict “video game-loving twin siblings living on the fringes of 1980s Tokyo,” who are drawn into a huge adventure after coming into contact with the Upside Down. Plot details for the spinoff have not yet been revealed. Tokyo is expected to take about six hours.
According to CBR, Netflix, Stephen Daldry, and prominent theatre producer Sonia Friedman are developing a stage play based on the universe and mythology of Stranger Things.
The drama will be written by Kate Trefry, and Daldry will also direct. It is currently unknown what the topic of the stage play will be, as well as where it will take place and when it might make its public debut.
After Stranger Things Season 5 is finished, it is anticipated that production on the spinoff series will start.
The fifth and final season of the original series, which will consist of 8 episodes, is scheduled to debut on Netflix in 2024.
