Taliban fires water cannon on women opposing university ban

  • Afghanistan’s water cannons dispersed university demonstrators.
  • Women were heard yelling, “The Taliban are cowards,” in one video footage.
  • Most secondary schools don’t admit girls to universities.

A group of female protestors against the Taliban’s ban on women attending universities in Afghanistan were dispersed by the deployment of a water cannon.

Women are seen seeking cover in a road in the city of Herat to flee a stream of water in a video posted to social media.

“Education is our right,” among other chants were being shouted by dozens of women who were organizing a protest march.

Women were heard yelling, “The Taliban are cowards,” in one video footage.

According to Abdel Rahman Habib, spokesman for the ministry of economy, women are not allowed to work for either national or foreign NGOs.

He mentioned that NGOs had received a letter imposing a ban “until further notice” and provided the justification that women weren’t abiding by Sharia law by donning the headscarf.

Mr. Nadeem said female students had been “dressing like they were going to a wedding”.

This week, the Taliban detained five women who were taking part in a rally in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. Additionally, three journalists were detained.

A day after the ban was issued, guards prevented hundreds of women from visiting campuses on Wednesday.

In Afghanistan, the majority of secondary institutions already do not accept girls.

In 2021, the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan, 20 years after being ousted by a military alliance led by the US.
