The streaming giant Netflix is rumoured to be planning to stop letting people share their passwords in early 2023.
There were rumours about the end of password sharing before, but MacRumors says that the changes will happen for real next year.
Netflix has known for a long time that people sharing passwords is a problem that hurts its earnings. However, the rise in subscriptions in 2020 kept the company from dealing with the problem.
This year, Netflix’s earnings went down, and this was the first time in 10 years that Netflix lost subscribers. CEO Reed Hastings decided it was time to do something about this.
The company plans to start charging users who share accounts with people outside of their household starting next year, a report said.
In October, the streaming giant announced that it had made the “Profile Transfer” feature available to all members around the world. This was done to stop people from sharing passwords.
Netflix also said that on December 30, 2022, it will start the “Nike Training Club,” which will let users stream fitness videos.
Sharing password may be illegal: IPO
The Intellectual Property Office, a government agency, says it is against the law in the UK to share passwords for streaming sites like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video (IPO).
“There are a range of provisions in criminal and civil law which may be applicable in the case of password sharing where the intent is to allow a user to access copyright-protected works without payment,” the IPO said.
“These provisions may include breach of contractual terms, fraud or secondary copyright infringement, depending on the circumstances,” the IPO guidelines stated.
