Jerry Bruckheimer teases that a third film is still in the works

  • Jerry Bruckheimer hints that a third National Treasure movie is still in the works.
  • Producer accidentally revealed news while talking about new series.
  •  Turteltaub revealed that the script for movie was ready but production was postponed.

Although it has been 15 years since the previous National Treasure movie, Jerry Bruckheimer hinted in an exclusive interview that a third film, featuring Nicolas Cage as treasure hunter guardian and cryptographer Gates, is still very much in the works.

While talking about the brand-new National Treasure spinoff series National Treasure: Edge of History, which is currently available to stream on Disney+, the mega-producer accidentally revealed the information.

“We said we’d like to make another National Treasure and they said, ‘Sure, let’s come up with a new cast,'” Bruckheimer said. “At the same time, we were developing National Treasure for the theaters with Nicolas Cage—which we still are. So, that’s ongoing.”

The script for a third movie, a prequel to 2004’s National Treasure and its 2007 sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, was finished, but production was delayed due to a lack of funding, screenwriter Jon Turteltaub said to Collider in 2018.

Fortunately, all indications point to some great progress being made—just take a look at Edge of History, which stars two series characters in their original roles. Harvey Keitel, who played former FBI agent Peter Sadusky, is back, and Justin Bartha, who plays Riley Poole, Ben Gates’ best friend and colleague, also makes an appearance.

And he hints that the dynamic duo are still collaborating, noting, “Ben and I have been working on this super important thing for the last three, four, 15 years.”

As for what that super important thing might be?

“Let’s just say,” Riley teases, “there’s 47 reasons to be interested.”

As National Treasure fans know, that’s a direct reference to the second film, in which the President of the United States (Bruce Greenwood) tells Ben about a mysterious page 47 in the titular Book of Secrets, but its contents are never revealed to the audience.

So, it certainly sounds like a third film is in order.
