Jason Ritter will be a member of the Yellowjackets. The second season of the popular Showtime survival series will feature the 42-year-old actor and his wife Melanie Lynskey.
Ritter is scheduled to make a one-episode guest appearance on the show, but specifics about his participation are still being kept under wraps. Ritter’s casting news was first reported by Variety.
In addition to their appearances in the Hulu true-crime thriller Candy, which also starred Jessica Biel’s real-life husband Justin Timberlake, Ritter and Lynskey, both 45, appeared together on another television project this year.
Yellowjackets follow the lives of four women who were brought together by a 1996 plane crash that trapped their high-school soccer team in the harsh Canadian wilderness for 19 months. It is an equal parts survival epic, psychological horror, and coming-of-age story.
The show not only examines how the teenagers survived in the wilderness, but also jumps in time between 1996 and 2021 to follow their adult counterparts as they suffer from an anonymous stalker who threatens them with the unsettling truth of what happened in the woods.
After Yellowjackets received positive reviews early in its first season last November, Season 2 was immediately renewed. Since then, the program has won numerous awards and has been nominated for seven Emmys.
Aside from Lynskey, the show also stars Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis, and Christina Ricci as the primary four survivors in the current day; their adolescent counterparts are Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, and Sammi Hanratty.
Ella Purnell, Steven Krueger, Warren Kole, Kevin Alves, Liv Hewson, and Courtney Eaton all starred in the show’s debut season. For season 2, Lauren Ambrose and Simone Kessell are added to the cast as the characters played by Hewson and Eaton as adults.
Elijah Wood, who starred in the Lord of the Rings films, will appear in a season-long guest arc on the Yellowjackets. This was revealed by Showtime in August. According to a network announcement, Wood, 41, will play Walter, a citizen detective “who will test Misty (Ricci, 42) in ways she won’t see coming.”
While this is going on, Ritter and Lynskey will re-appear together in Candy and other movies including The Big Ask (2013), We’ll Never Have Paris (2014), and The Intervention (2016).
When asked if her husband would “lose his mind” for the chance to make a cameo on Yellowjackets, Lynskey previously told PEOPLE in June.
“I believe he would do anything. He would, in fact, “She spoke. “In other words, I want them to cast anybody they choose. I won’t ever press my hubby for them. But they should be aware that he would act immediately.” Season 2 of Yellowjackets debuts on March 26, 2023.
