Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet President Joe Biden in the U.S.

The Ukrainian president hasn’t left the country since Russia invaded on February 24.

Mr. Zelenskyy tweeted that he was headed to the US to “strengthen resilience and defense capabilities.”

“I’ll also have a speech at Congress and bilateral meetings,” he said.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday evening’s session will focus on democracy.

US politicians will vote on a year-end spending package that includes $45bn for Ukraine. The US is sending Patriot surface-to-air missiles to help Ukraine oppose Russia’s invasion.

The cash would be the largest American infusion of aid to Ukraine, surpassing President Biden’s $37bn (£30bn) emergency request, and will ensure funding for months to come.

During Russia’s invasion, Mr. Zelenskyy despatched his wife to European cities to seek support.

Zelenskyy paid a surprise visit to frontline troops in Bakhmut, Donetsk province.

Mr. Zelenskyy hailed his troops’ “courage, resilience, and strength” after visiting a site of intensive fighting since Russia invaded Ukraine.

Mr. Zelenskyy was given a Ukrainian flag in a video broadcast by his office and hinted at giving it to US leaders.

“They signed our lovely Ukrainian flag,” Mr. Zelenskyy remarked.

“It’s not easy. Our braver people require stronger weapons as the enemy’s force grows. From the lads to Congress, to the president. Their support isn’t enough. Hint: it’s not enough.”
