‘Barbie’ first trailer gives Margot Robbie a retro look

Barbie receives amazing reviews before its premiere

‘Barbie’ first trailer gives Margot Robbie a retro look

  • The film is being released more than 60 years after the doll was invented.
  • Director Greta Gerwig is nominated for an Oscar for the film’s screenplay.
  • The release of Barbie is scheduled for July 21, 2023.

Barbie‘ seemed to be the only topic of conversation on the internet a few months ago. It caused quite a stir since Ryan Gosling, who plays Barbie’s lover Ken, and Margot Robbie, who plays the movie’s title heroine, were shooting some exterior scenes on the Florida streets.

However, since we aren’t currently drowning in Barbie news, now is the ideal time to see the film’s first trailer and see how everything will play out on the big screen.

Since the movie won’t include the wildly popular Aqua song “Barbie Girl,” we may repeat the line “The Barbie trailer looks, duh, plastic and great” as many as necessary.

At the same time, you can see that the Barbie universe is distinct, as director Greta Gerwig, who is nominated for an Academy Award, has previously hinted in earlier interviews.

Some expectations are sure to be disappointed or shattered because the live-action film is being released more than 60 years after the doll was invented.

The trailer doesn’t reveal much because it mainly only shows Robbie standing on a beach wearing vintage Barbie’s best, including the swimsuit with black and white stripes and the 1950s hairstyle.

The trailer closes on a much more colourful note, with brief segments showcasing the star-studded ensemble of the movie enjoying their amazing, plastic lives in a hot-pink Barbie world, set to Richard Strauss’ “Also sprach Zarathustra,” which viewers are likely familiar with from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Another illuminating aspect of the mood and setting of this new film is the writing of Barbie by director Gerwig and Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story). Since Gerwig and Baumbach are both renowned for portraying certain harsh realities of life with humour at its core, their interpretation of the well-known figure is all the more intriguing.

In an interview, Will Ferrell, who plays the CEO of Mattel, the firm that made the Barbie doll, hinted that the film will be a parody on patriarchy and a critique of the social and aesthetic norms that are placed on women.

Barbie’s cast of A-list actors also includes Simu Liu from Shanghai and the Legend of the Ten Rings, America Ferrera from Superstore, Ariana Greenblatt from Borderlands, Ncuti Gatwa from Sex Education, Issa Rae from Insecure, Hari Nef from Transparent, Michael Cera from Superbad, Emma Mackey from Death on the Nile, Kate McKinnon from Saturday Night Live, Alexandra Shipp from X-Men: Dark Phoenix (Industry).

The release of Barbie is scheduled for July 21, 2023.
