A convoy of two armored utility vehicles carrying eight people to Beirut came under small arms fire, Ireland’s defense forces reported.

Another UNIFIL member is in bad condition after surgery late Wednesday, the statement stated. Two others are injured.

The Irish defense forces confirmed the death of one of their peacekeepers in Lebanon last night.

Unknown motive.

Irish Defense Minister Simon Coveney will visit UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday to address the incident.

We’re proud of our unbroken record of UN peacekeeping. We must never forget the risks, warned Irish President Michael D. Higgins.

UNIFIL was created in 1978 to supervise Israel’s departure from Lebanon during the Lebanese Civil War and the Israeli invasion.

It has almost 10,000 members from Indonesia, India, and Italy.
