Four toddlers fell through the ice at a Solihull lake, police say.

Sunday afternoon, youngsters fell into Babbs Mill Park’s water and experienced cardiac arrest.

Initial reports stated six youngsters were on the frozen lake, but police have not confirmed this.

West Midlands Police Supt. Richard Harris said teams would search overnight.

When the fire department arrived, up to six persons were in the water, Supt Harris added.

After rescuing four youngsters, we continued the search for more.

Given the temperature, age, and time of the children, he stated it was “no longer a search and rescue effort.”

Teams on inflatable dinghies and torches scour the dark water at the local nature reserve.

Witness: “I saw firefighters in the lake cracking ice.”

He noticed several people in trouble, including three being treated. Sunday evening was very cold.

West Midlands Fire Service stated police officers and members of the public were in the river trying to reach the children when they arrived.

One cop was hospitalized with minor hypothermia.

First, rescuers swam to one child, then rescued three more.

All were given enhanced life support and brought to the hospital.

Two are at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, the others at Heartland’s. No clinical updates or ages have been given.

Children were playing on a pond’s ice and fell through, the fire service reported.

“Our water rescue teams arrived and acted assertively to take control of the event and perform rescues utilizing specialized equipment and entering the water,” it stated earlier.

“Firefighters and ambulance staff treated victims at the spot before transporting them to hospitals.”

After a weekend of snow and frost, temperatures as low as -10C are expected over the next few days.

West Midlands Fire Service district commander Richard Stanton urged against entering open water.

“Next several days will be very chilly,” he stated.

“Adults and kids, avoid open water. Never go on the ice, no matter how thick or safe it seems.
